Anna props herself up in the large bed to look at her child, Mary, being washed by two maids. Another attendant carries away a large kettle (for warming the bath water). Two others approach Anna with food (a bowl and wooden spoon) and a small urn with a cloth. Yet another attendant stands in the doorway with a spindle of yarn. Above the doorway, Joachim looks down from an upper room with hands clasped.
At the left two women are warming or drying cloths or aprons before a fire. In the main room, Anna is propped up in bed and being fed by a pair of attendants. Two more women are washing the baby Jesus in a barrel-like tub at the base of the bed. Two others are bringing food behind the bed. The room has a coffered ceiling and the bed spread is green with extensive gold embroidery. The attendants are well-dressed in garments of different colors, and several wear veils or headcloths.
This is the same as the previous scene except that it excludes the fireplace in the left corner (of the triangular frame of the vault section) and includes the right corner of the fresco where a woman waters plants in the flowerbox on a ledge outside a window.
For St Anna, Mary's mother, two scenes of Mary's birth, in a detailed domestic setting. Both are by early 15th cent. Umbrian painter, Ottaviano Nelli: one in San Francesco, Gubbio (Nelli's home), the other (2 shots) in the chapel of the Palazzo Trinci, Foligno. #painting #MedievalSky #SaintOfTheDay
Arms outstretched, Margaret is swallowed by a large green dragon within her dark prison cell.
This is the top of the panel. In the large central image, Margaret is frontal, haloed, veiled, looking straight ahead, and raising her arms. Above and to the sides there are small narrative panels with scenes of her life. Above her, in the top row, the prefect spots her tending sheep and a man on horseback kidnaps her to bring her to him.
Gruesome image of Margaret, bound and naked except for a robe around her waist, as she is being beaten. Two of the men on the right seem to recoil in horror.
1/The pagan prefect, burning with lust, seized St Margaret while the 15 year old was tending sheep. She declared herself a Christian, was brutally tortured, imprisoned, and swallowed by a dragon which she burst open with the sign of the cross. #SaintOfTheDay #MedievalArt #Painting
