About a million years ago, an ancient lake once covered this entire region

After draining due to volcanic activity by the #RioGrande, these wetlands and flat-basin floors remained, while wind and sediment from the #SangredeCristo formed the dunes of the nearby #GreatSandDunesNP

Landscape photograph of alpine scene with approaching summer storm. A large, treeless ridge sweeps from bottom to right, leading toward a group of craggy peaks. A deep and timbered mountain valley is center left. Heavy blue-gray clouds fill the sky with ominous glints of sunset orange just breaking through below them.

An oldie from monsoon season in alpine New Mexico, had to flee shortly after this.

A moody scene of a sunset and clouds over mountaintops.

So, all of my graphics programs are crashing on this comp...but I was able to edit one of my favorite pics from our week in CO. This is a moody sunset in Westcliffe.

Layers of park From the top: blue sky, Sangre de Cristo Range, foothills, Great Sand Dunes, and San Luis Valley.

One of the cool things about #GreatSandDunes #NationalPark & #NationalPreserve #NPres is that it includes a bit of the #highplains, #sanddunes #dunes, lots of #foothills, and shares part of #SangredeCristo #mountains.

Also, #sandboarding.

If it looks like you have to descend a steep sand dune face to reach #ColdCreek #Canyon below, that's because you do. You will also have to climb back up.

But: what a view of the #SangredeCristo #Mountains!

In this landscape monochrome photo, the bottom of the frame is the tree covered floor of the San Luis Valley the covers the frame from left to right. There are a variety of trees ranging from light to dark. Above the tree line, the great sand dunes being and cover the frame left to right and up to three quarters to the top of the frame. The dunes are windswept into a variety of shapes that are dotted with peaks, ridges, valleys and troughs creating beautiful lines, texture, and light and shadow. Above the dunes is a part of the Sangre de Cristo range. The first peak is a pine covered range the starts one third into the frame from the left and moves horizontally across the frame. Bhind that is an even taller peak that goes from just above the dunes on the far left and rises to a snow covered point at about the middle of frame, briefly dips and rises to an even taller peak at the top of the frame and then meanders slightly lower until it disappears right of frame. From top to bottom and left to right, this photo is mostly land but showing three distinct ecosystems with just a small bit of sky at the top, and mostly on the top left. Observing, one can only feel awe.

The #SangredeCristo range trapped the sand of the prevailing winds of the San Luis Valley & created the #GreatSandDunes. I captured this leaving a sunrise hike yesterday.

Sangre de Cristo Mountains

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are one of the longest mountain ranges in the world covering a span of
250 miles, starting from Poncha Pass in Colorado to the lowest point Las Vegas, N.M. The highest
elevation within the range, is Blanca Peak at 14,345 feet, then Wheeler Peak at 13,161 feet, and Baldy
Peak, also known to the Tewa’s as “flower mountain,
” at 12,622 ft.

The ancestors of Pueblo Indians and the Apache, have lived within the mountains of the Sangres for
thousands of years. The mountain peaks are sources of spiritual energy, and sacred places of reverence
that encompass bodies of water which serve as doors to other realms. Rituals and prayers to these holy
entities kept a balance of harmony between man and nature.

Land was not revered in the same way by Spanish colonists. In many cases, Spanish colonists did not
individually own land; it was stewarded as a communal possession belonging to groups of settlers, or
clusters of villages. In 1719, the Spanish explorer Antonio Valverde y Cosio, reportedly was awestruck by
red-tinted snowy peaks at sunset, and called the mountain range, “Sangre de Cristo” or “Blood of
Christ.

” At the time, the Spanish referred to the mountains as the “Sierra Madre” or “Mother Mountain”
range.
