CR/CL: Cruel Master by #LucySmoke & #AJMacey

#MichaelNormanJohnson does so well with characters like this. Dark & commanding, yet vulnerable for the right woman. #SarahPuckett is a great counter to him.

Author: Janine Infante Bosco, USA Today bestselling author

Performed by: Michael Norman Johnson and Sarah Puckett

*****Book review*****

>Seeing in a New Light<

Tara Burnside has had a crush on Gianluca (Capone) Capizzones for a while. If you're reading the series in order (recommended but not required), it was commented on in earlier books.

I like how Capone's attraction to Tara hits him like a ton of bricks. For so long, she was just his president's daughter. Now that he sees her, unseeing her is impossible. I do appreciate that he keeps himself mostly in check until she hits that magical number.

-- Book quote
'I’m the last person who should be following her around, especially after I reacted the way that I did. It’s like my subconscious took one look at Tara all grown up and decided she was mine.'
-- Capone Capizzones

This is darkish, but not in the expected way. Yes, there are enemies that knock on their door, bullets flying, but that is such a small part of this installment that it's easy to forget that this is a serious MC. The real darkness comes from the big C. That's all I'm saying on that.

While I do like this, I was hoping for more MC action. The story is full of emotions as Capone and Tara navigate a slippery slope.

I've spent days questioning my rating. On one hand, it's well written and engaging. On the other, it doesn't meet my expectations. I went in blind, as usual, and expected it to be more in line with the prior books. I'll think on it more, but 4/4.5 is still a good rating. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators, Sarah Puckett and Michael Norman Johnson, continue to do a good job with this series. 🎧❀️🎧

>Crush Realized<

Not that it's required, but if you have read the first book of the series, you know that there's some serious pining going on between Leonardo (Leo) Messina and Natalia (Dolcezza, Nat) Mazzone Accardi.

I like that this goes back to their early adult years. There's a lot of focus on how their relationship built over time. Of course, that wasn't to be their life. As archaic as it is, I can appreciate the tension created by the arranged marriage... interruption.

-- Book quote
'I equally hate and adore Leo’s pet name for me. I love he calls me something no one else does, but why does it have to be something so innocent and pure and sisterly?'
-- Natalia Mazzone

I wasn't keen on the cheating even if her husband was getting his πŸ† wet all over town and beyond. I think my dislike was more about how risky she was about it once she decided to cross that line.

Putting this out there - I would've liked a scene with Leo and Nat at H or somewhere of a similar nature, even if private.

As for the suspense and darkness created by the general Mafia world, I was all for it. The backstabbing. The double crossing. All of it. There are triggers, though.

Toward the end, it does reference a lot of what happened in book one, but I still think you could get by without reading it (it's worth reading, though).

I listened to the audio book as part of the >Mazzone Mafia Complete Series.< The narrators are in duet! πŸ₯³ Michael Gallagher and Sarah Puckett are great. There are a couple of mispronunciations that stuck out (i.e., Greenwich), but those were infrequent.

***DUET NARRATION***

>Sad & Fierce<

Rick Sanders gets so much more than he expects when he rescues a new employee, that's for certain. Some might say he deserves some of it. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'm not saying I'm one of them, but I'm also not denying it.

The fact that Nina Costin Morozov isn't what she seems is only the tip of the iceberg. The more we get to know her, the more my heart breaks for her. The things she and her sister endure is absolutely wretched. Yes, a definite check of your triggers is recommended. Not everything is explicitly shared, but what's implied includes graping of children and human trafficking, plus the expected Mafia / cartel dark elements.

-- Book quote
'She’s a good girl who just did a bad thing, regardless of the provocation. She’s raw and exposed, and in my experience that’s when a person’s real personality kicks in.'
-- Rick Sanders

I have mixed feelings about a couple of scenes, including one from the past, but overall, I really like this addition to the series. I *so* need to circle back for Joseph and Anna's books.

***DUET NARRATION***

>Breaking the Cycle?<

Delilah and Royce "[The] Judge" Taylor do not have anything resembling a traditional romance. Honestly, there really isn't a lot of "romance" going on. Romps? Yeah, there are plenty of those, but there are strings to many of the encounters that occur with another.

Yes, there's OM drama. Some serious drama. Drama that comes with a hefty dose of trigger warnings. <spoiler excluded here>

I can't and won't deny that this is well-written, but it felt like 75% of the book was about one abusive relationship or another, and very little was left for relationship development between Royce and Delilah. My estimation may not be precise, but it's pretty close.

I get that most of it was necessary to get the full effect of how an abusive relationship can start and spiral, but at that point, it was already on the long side for a romance, so why not give the MCs a more fleshed out ending? Even though we know Royce isn't like that with her, we don't really see beyond his caveman tendencies, which look a lot like her last relationship in many ways. Just my two cents.

FYI - This doesn't appear to be published in ebook. At least, not on Amazon. It has zero bearing on my review, but I thought I'd share.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators, Sarah Puckett and Michael Norman Johnson, are fabulous in duet! I've enjoyed both in the past, so my expectations were set, and they delivered. πŸŽ§πŸ’œπŸŽ§

<b>Assassin + Assassin = Mayhem</b>

Dante Villani cracks me up sometimes and infuriates me others. Mostly, though, I enjoy his company. He's charming, which is good, but he misses a couple of indicators that trouble is in their midst. He really is pretty trusting for someone in his line of work. I'm just saying.... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

-- Book quote
'I'm back to my murderous self. Even if it's just for a fleeting moment. I really do need to shoot shit more often. Best. Damn. Therapy. Ever.'
-- Dante Villani

Within a chapter or two, the words I used to describe Chellla from 'Savage Beast' are screaming at me about Anya - fierce but naΓ―ve. As much as I love her fierceness, the naivety comes across as a disappointment. Another person who has spent their life in the Mafia without much of a spidey sense? That bothers me.

It is a minor detractor as I like how the bulk of this plays out. The sizzle between Anya and Dante is strong from the beginning and carries throughout the book. The fact that Dante's friends and family pop up constantly is another thing I like. They are an integral part of everything. Well, almost everything. πŸ˜‰

Even though characters and storylines from previous books make appearances, I don't believe prior reading is necessary. There are enough details to provide a pretty good picture of the relevant parts. As is often the case, prior reading is likely to enhance the experience. Your call.

>Family Blinders<

I can easily sum up Marchella "Chella" Amante. Fierce and naΓ―ve. She's fiercely protective of those she cares about, but her blinders, especially when it comes to her brother, are undoubtedly a hindrance. There are times that I also feel her naivety is a bit much.

Then there is Roman Villani. There are times when I have similar thoughts about him. In his case, him trying to shed his enforcer mentality has him getting caught up in his own makings. I do like him despite his faults.

-- Book quote
'The vibrations ripple through me like I’m a body of water, and he’s a smooth stone skipping over the surface.'
-- Marchella Amante

Although I definitely liked this book, there are some unnecessary repetitions and timeline discrepancies. Ignoring them is easy enough, but it still strikes a nerve.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators, Tor Thom and Sarah Puckett, are really good. With different accents, it would've been really awesome if this was in duet. I still enjoyed their efforts.
