All infants, regardless of sex, race or ethnic background, are at risk for Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB) 🩸 This persists until they start eating regular foods, usually at age 4-6 months, and until the normal intestinal bacteria start making Vitamin K.
All babies are born with low levels of Vitamin K.
The injection is recommended within the first 6 hours of life.
Without it, babies are 81 times more likely to develop severe bleeding.
If they develop severe bleeding, over 20% will not survive it. #InfantMortality
