I think this is just a visual device to indicate that some live signal is being picked up, not sure if it has any particular utility. It's a bit like a slightly old fashioned ammeter or voltmeter.
A very similar device from The Alchemists of Sound (2003) about the Radiophonic Workshop. This is a black and white clip and is probably from the 1960s or 70s.

Thoroughly enjoyed #ScamInterceptors on BBC2 yesterday (ep 3.3) & the race against time to stop someone transferring their bank details via AnyDesk. I'd like AD to say prominently on their homepage to watch out for scams but assume it's not in their interest to do so. Maybe browsers could flag up?

I say this every year, but Scam Interceptors on BBC One is an essential watch, and the current fourth series really lifts the lid on some of the evil tricks scammers do. Kudos to @nickstapleton.tv and the team, especially @jimbrowning11.bsky.social for getting them the access.

When #ScamInterceptors was on tv i used to go on Twitter and see it lit up with people discussing the show. Now nothing, totally dead. Sad to lose a forum like that for talking about important issues. Guess we’ll have to make a new one!

There is a need for the BBC #ScamInterceptors programme. I have serious issues with its editing and drama presentation to create tensions for the viewer. I know my pals mum is terrified by it. She's banned from dealing with anyone on the phone on money she must hang up or refer anyone to her son.
