Whole terrains sandwiched into a single scan: a block of Ordnance Survey maps lifted up mid-pass to chop them into these colourful slices.

I raided a stack of Ordnance Survey maps and tourist guides and fed their spines into the scanner. Lifting the block mid-scan created breaks and smears—folded #landscape

A scanographic photograph of hazel catkins

Another from today's Catkins series: golden tassels against a sky-blue haze; old-fashioned and illustrative.

A scanographic photograph of hazel catkins—the earliest sign of Spring

A scanographic photograph of hazel catkins—the earliest sign of Spring

Hazel catkins — an early sign of the new year. I scanned them face-down, laid organza over them (scanner lid 'up', in a dark room), then inverted the scan for these soft, painterly tassels.

An abstract image of scanned and fragmented map books

An abstract image of scanned and fragmented map books

Created using a flat-bed scanner and a stack of ordinance survey maps and guide books, I wanted to concertina as much geography as possible into a single image.

Self-portrait of a woman with long brown hair turned slightly over her shoulder, surrounded by evergreen foliage and dried botanicals. Warm golden light and floating specks overlay the image, creating a layered, atmospheric effect.

Internet Goddess.

We're throwing it back far today with some scanography. I haven't touched this medium in a decade, but I really would like to make a small return to it some day. I think I moved on from scanography due to the medium's limitations.

For those unfamiliar with the term, scanography is made by using a flatbed scanner to capture and create a digitized image of 3-dimensional objects. I used to have access to one at my old job and had a lot of fun scanning all sorts of things like creepy dolls, plants, holiday decorations, old gloves... It's fun to find new ways to create imagery!

Image description: Monochrome image consisting of punched-out circles and the material surrounding the holes. Flat, rectangular sheets of this material are placed overlapping each other and at a diagonal line within the frame, creating repeated alternating black and white circular fragments. I see this image as alternating in these ways: black/white, light/dark, positive/negative, mass/void, circular/linear.

This week's #BlueSkyArtShow prompt is #Alternating, which caused me to consider a lot –– it's cool to see how everyone creatively interpreted the word. More in ALT text.

There are three square images in a row. Each has a black background

Image one has a large white wavy circle in the center, and its edges are intersected white wavy lines. The edges of these shapes are lined with thin bands of red, yellow, cyan, and blue.

Image two has several thin wavy circular white lines that overlap each other. The edges of many of the lines are lined with red, green, and blue.

Image three has several wavy vertical white lines that overlap each other. The edges of many of the lines are lined with red, green, and blue.

Returning with another piece from my time at CCAD! These three pieces were created using #scanography. If you have access to a scanner, grab some stuff, move it around while scanning, and see what happens!
