#SciFiSat [1/7] As the first day ended, they took their stations to wait for what was supposed to happen. It was not necessary to do anything to birth the ship; the pod did it of itself when it was ready. If their calculations had been correct, that moment was – now!
#SciFiSat [2/7] They waited. Nothing happened. Then suddenly, without a clue that anything had changed, the com lights winked on. The cam screen also lit up, displaying static because its external port was sealed. They had been birthed back into real time.
#SciFiSat [3/7] “Cmdr. Yang, unseal the cam port,” Lara said a little harshly.
Everyone grew quiet. The remote cam worked perfectly. It turtle-necked from its port – swiveled – panned up … and fixed its gaze upon the stars.
#SciFiSat [4/7] And stars were everywhere – above, to port, to starboard … They rolled the ship so they could look below and there, too, they saw only stars. One of them was large and bright, but yet it was too small to be any longer named the Sun of Earth.
#SciFiSat [5/7] They got a fix on that star, took measurements, and made calculations. They had come precisely one tenth of a light year, even as they had intended, and were drifting in interstellar space.
#SciFiSat [6/7] The Engineers had come up to gawk along with the rest of the crew. Kolm was standing behind Robbie gripping his shoulder.
“Look, Goody,” Robbie said, laughing emotionally. “Right there – that’s Epsilon Eridani. Another 100 jumps and we could be there! …
#SciFiSat [7/7] “We came all this way and nobody saw us. Nobody knew we existed – we were outside of time. It’s awesome – awesome!”
“We’ve done it, friend of mine,” Kolm said. “Sure it’s all been worthwhile. We’ve proved that humanity has the power to move among the stars.”
