This was a great session at the #SciWri25 conference last month, and a good read here:

That’s a wrap on #SciWri25, my 7th time attending a #SciWri meeting! I always return home with inspiration, enthusiasm, & a stack of business cards from all of the other “top nerds” I met 😉 Thank you, @sciencewriters.org, for going above & beyond to make this happen after a last-minute venue change!

Thirsty and Gassy A.I. has serious energy–water–climate implications. But without a uniform way to quantify A.I. energy-water use, it's hard to distinguish breakthroughs from greenwashing.

It's #COP30 (this week and next), and world leaders have another opportunity to negotiate agreements to address, among other things, “thirsty” and “gassy” A.I. use.

My latest on SustainLab -- informed by a scientific briefing at #SciWri25 hosted by @sciencewriters.org + @sciencewriting.bsky.social

PS: Meeting so many folks who want to get into #scicomm / #sciencejournalism at #sciwri25 is pushing me to update Bri and my old Beginner's Guide to a Career in Science Writing, which is horribly outdated. Watch this space! And contact me if you have any contributions.

A view of a large tank at the Shedd Aquarium with a dolphin jumping out of the water. The photo is taken from the audience, and a few heads are visible in the bottom of the photo. The floor-to-ceiling windows behind the tank give a view of Lake Michigan, creating somewhat of an illusion that the take goes far off into the distance.

I loved visiting the Shedd Aquarium as a kid. I remember sitting here, closing my eyes, and promising myself I’d work with animals one day.

I’ve spent a decade studying animals and came back to Chicago for #SciWri25. I now write about the wonders of wildlife.

Little Stella, we kept our promise.

If You Love Insects and Other Arthropods, We Have the Coloring Book for You Check out the free coloring book with the best name ever: "Arthropods!"

I still think it's neat that I can wake up in snowy Chicago, and be home in autumnal North Carolina at lunch time. Cool.

It was real, #SciWri25! Thanks to all who made the trip.

Just for kicks, have a free coloring book of arthropods.

It's fun. You deserve it.🧪

I just heard from two different people at #SciWri25 that next year's meeting is ... here? Corvallis?

That is wild. I'm not sure how some details of that will work, but I do look forward to running a makeshift science writer B&B out of my apartment for my out of town friends.

Y’know, I really had a goddamn delightful time at #SciWri25. I learned some great stuff from other speakers, we had soooo many laughs at our panel & I saw friends I haven’t seen in ages.

PLUS I talked to some younger folks in the industry who challenged my thinking.

10/10, see ya next year ✌🏻🤓

Still processing all I took in at #SciWri25, but I know one thing: Science writers are crazy inspiring and determined people who will never stop seeking and sharing the facts. So grateful to learn from them, thanks to the huge efforts of @sciencewriters.org and @sciencewriting.bsky.social.

Actually, since many of the ones I know are at #SciWri25 -- anyone got suggestions here? Good ones for podcast recording especially welcome

Wow. @jjmcdona.bsky.social of @factcheck.org says she doesn’t use the term #misinformation anymore bc it’s been politicized and become a trigger word. “It doesn’t mean anything anymore,” she said at #SciWri25. She now just says things are false or untrue.

Oop, don't be a doomer, chimes in the social scientist. Most people vaccinate and that's an important message to share.

Most people vaccinate, especially incredibly cool and successful people. #Facts #SciWri25 🧪🩺
