#FakeScience #PaperMills #ScienceFraud #FaktenStattFakes #TrustScience #WahrheitZählt #RettetDieWissenschaft #EchteForschung
Footnote 25 in Chapter 14, p.144 of Feyerabend's (1975/1993) 'Against Method': "25. 'Carefully' has been contested by R.R. Newton, <<The Crime of Claudius Ptolemy>>, Baltimore. Newton shows that many of Ptolemy's 'data' were manufactured to fit his model. For his optics this has been known for a long time."
BREAKING: Ptolemy (c. 369-282 BC) was a p-hacker.
I'll bring you more as the story unfolds. I fully expect a pile-on at Ptolemy's social media accounts in the next 24-48 hours. Hold tight.

Instead, we’re looking at a system—and one that’s getting better at evading detection.

As in life, in science, we need to learn to crawl before we run. What can happen when we skip basic research is illustrated by this drastic case of medical fraud by Paolo Macchiarini, which ultimately cost multiple lives.

Has anyone else had the experience recently of a whole load of (probably fraudulent) papers being added to their ResearchGate listing? I’m just removing ~12 preprints with 377 authors from 2019/20 by Katsushige Abe that list me as an author! #ScienceFraud
In 2021, Jining First People’s Hospital in China disciplined 35 researchers involved in fraudulent publications, part of a broader crackdown on fake medical papers linked to paper mills—companies that produce fraudulent manuscripts for researchers under pressure to publish for career advancement. A surge in retractions followed, particularly in China, which has the highest retraction rates globally. A study by Nature revealed that hospitals and universities in China, Saudi Arabia, India, and other countries exhibit high retraction rates, often tied to research environments that prioritize quantity over quality. The rise in retractions has been attributed to the growing use of paper mills, with sleuths identifying patterns of misconduct. Despite challenges in tracking retractions due to data errors, these findings suggest that institutions with high retraction rates may reflect broader cultural issues in research integrity. However, retraction rates alone may not fully capture the extent of poor-quality research, as not all problematic papers are retracted. (Nature)
