A construction on a beach made from driftwood rises like a natural sculpture rugged, weatherworn, and strangely elegant. The structure, assembled from long-forgotten remnants of trees shaped by the sea, stands against the open sky like a tribute to time and tide. Sun-bleached logs form the skeletal framework, their twisted shapes locking together in accidental harmony. Branches, tangled and smoothed by waves, weave through each other to form partial walls or a crude roof, offering just enough shade or shelter from the wind.

At a glance, it might resemble a primitive hut or a child's imaginative fort. But look closer, and you see the artistry in its randomness the way each piece seems to have found its perfect place despite its brokenness. Sand clings to the base of the structure, anchoring it like a memory. Shells, seaweed, and the occasional feather are caught between the driftwood beams, decorations offered by the ocean.

Coral Begur is a striking sculpture by Catalan artist Concep Gual, unveiled in June 2024 at Sa Riera beach in Begur, Costa Brava. Crafted from sinuously bent iron and painted a vivid red, the piece measures 4 meters in length and 2 meters in height. It serves as a tribute to Begur's historical coral fishing industry, which thrived from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. During that era, local fishermen embarked on extensive voyages to regions such as Italy, Greece, North Africa, and even the Cape Verde Islands, leaving the town largely devoid of men for months at a time.

Concep Gual, a native of Begur with ancestral ties to the coral trade, drew inspiration from stories passed down through her family. Her artistic education spans cities like Barcelona, San Francisco, Florence, and London, and her work has been exhibited internationally in locations including New York, Paris, and Tokyo . Gual's creations, encompassing jewelry, sculptures, and paintings, are deeply influenced by Mediterranean themes, characterized by organic, feminine forms and a vibrant red palette.

Prior to the installation of the large-scale sculpture, a smaller version of "Coral Begur" was used as the honorary award at the Begur Costa Brava International Film Festival starting in 2022 . Additionally, in December 2024, Gual showcased her "Coral Begur" collection featuring paintings, sculptures, and jewelry at the Coton et Bois gallery in Barcelona, further celebrating the rich heritage of Begur's coral fishing legacy.
