#Scything is so damn satisfying! πŸ˜€

I really enjoyed the session today - seeing the patch so quickly getting done, with only three of us on scythes. No noisy machinery, no gas fumes, just chatting amongst ourselves, and providing a curious spectacle to some of the dogs being walked... πŸ˜„

Couple of hours scything this morning. Congratulated myself in spotting a wasps nest, only to stand on another. Is it vinegar for wasp stings? ......asking for a friend!

The meadow flowers in the dentists' garden have now set seed and so I tried out my new scythe. It was fun, very interesting, and did a good job. I'm happy with the results for my first time... and am hoping to stop sweating in the next few days #scythe #scything #meadow #nomow #nomowmay

In Lye Valley our newest volunteers are here getting a chance to learn #scything with our Austrian scythes. A new skill for them and later they can help more as the reed gets tall & it is all hands to tools to reduce its dominance. @friendlyevalley.bsky.social @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social

A fantastic #woodland Tuesday today in glorious sunshine. We’ve been busy gathering cord wood from winter felled trees before it gets overgrown with nettles and brambles then, after a quick lesson, I was set to #scything the shed β€œlawn”. A good skill to have and more good exercise in the green gym😎

In #Lyevalley #fen we find to our delight our first Early Marsh Orchid Dactylorhiza incarnata is in flower! A dark pink version with typical unspotted leaves. A big reward for all that #scything & raking. Wonder how many more to come. @friendlyevalley.bsky.social

It's #scything, raking & more scything & raking in #LyeValley #SSSI #fen at the moment. So important to get that spring rush & horsetail growth down before orchid spikes emerge. Even trained a new vol from Latvia! @friendlyevalley.bsky.social

Precision scything.
Just cut the Hard Rush, and don't touch the Common Spotted Orchids, Marsh Helleborines, Fen Bedstraw, Marsh Thistles, Marsh Lousewort, or anything else in flower. So that's what he did...😎

After only a few weeks' rest, the scything team have restarted our cutting regime for the year. Here, working at the northern end of our SSSI, we're removing mostly rush and sedge to give our rarer plants more light and air.

One man went to mow...
Except this is part of our north fen, not a meadow, and rather than hay, we're giving the Blunt Flowered Rush (Juncus subnodulosus) its first cut of the year. If left to it's own devices, it tends to overshadow our scarcer plants.
