The drawing depicts a peacock mantis shrimp, a small rainbow shrimp who dwells on the sea floor. The back of the crustacean is shades or green while the legs are red. The body is blue and the eyes are purple. Facts: The Mantis Shrimp is one of the coolest organisms on earth IMO! There’s too many cool things about them, I can’t pick a favorite fact! They are believed to have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom! While we humans posses 3 photoreceptors, mantis shrimps can have anywhere from 11 to 16! This means they can see colors we can’t even comprehend as well as UV light and even cancer! Despite their name, the Mantis shrimp is neither shrimp nor mantis! Rather than a true shrimp, they are in a separate class of crustaceans and are more closely related to crabs. The mantis part relates to their raptorial forelimbs that they use kill prey and repel predators. Other names include ‘pistol shrimp’ because it recalls the way they hunt. They punch their prey at the force of over a .22 caliber bullet. Its fascinatingly quick, about 8 milliseconds (50x faster than blinking). The punch is equivalent to around 1,500 newtons (on average, humans punch about 250-450 newtons) and can shatter thick aquarium glass—and yes they can injure a human! Did I mention they’re only about 10cm to 18cm or about 4 to 7 inches long?
The mantis shrimp is one of the most fascinating animals on earth imo! They can punch at the force of a .22 caliber and 1500+ (N)ewtons. Humans can usually punch abt 300N. facts in the alt description
