Your past shouldn’t define your future. Incarceration creates barriers to jobs, education, and family stability but second chances open the door to dignity and purpose.

At A New Way of Life, we help people rebuild and create a better future.

They are also the result of overzealous law enforcement that hyperfocuses on people in poor communities and communities of color.

We need to do better. We need to focus on policies that promote healing and accountability, not policies of exclusion and punishment. #secondchancemonth

SPLC, FJI sue to stop Florida’s attempt to seize settlement agreement Federal and state lawsuits challenge the Florida Department of Corrections’ enforcement of a $547,850 lien against an incarcerated person.

During #SecondChanceMonth, I spoke about the fact that #Florida doesn't pay prison laborers. To make matters worse, the state often charges those serving time "cost of incarceration" liens.

It's perverse.

Today, @fji-law.bsky.social joined @splcenter.org to challenge that practice in the courts.

#SecondChanceMonth may be over, but the work to remove barriers to housing, jobs, and more continues all year—with or without the Trump administration's support.

This year, the White House chose not to recognize April as #SecondChanceMonth, missing a key opportunity to highlight barriers to reentry for formerly incarcerated people.

It’s the first year without a presidential proclamation since the Trump administration first recognized the occasion.

"Although the idea of a 'second chance' is celebrated, the reality is that the door to opportunity remains shut for millions of Americans coming out of prison."

#SecondChanceMonth is ending, but the work to remove barriers to housing, jobs, and more for formerly incarcerated people must continue.

The following message from the Illinois Alliance for Reentry and Justice, ILARJ, is displayed:
The majority of ILARJ employees are formerly incarcerated. Second chances don’t require cages. As second chance month ends, we must publicly acknowledge second chances need first chances. Addressing barriers to reentry must include closing paths to incarceration. Included is a picture of ILARJ employees and a background of the Chicago skyline.

#SecondChanceMonth is a recognition and public acknowledgement of reentry efforts, but many fail to mention how many people never had a first chance. The best reentry is no entry, and fixing the root harms tied to our social determinants of health will achieve this. #ReimagineAndRemakeJustice
