When I'm self patterning and especially when fitting, I find it very helpful to put the undergarments on my dress form. #Over60Cosplay #costumer #sewist #cosplayer #sewingtip
Whenever I make a cosplay item I try to add extra pockets...believe me they'll come in handy. This frock coat received 2 extra pockets attached to the lining. #Over60Cosplay #costumer #sewist #cosplayer #sewingtip
Have you considered using dental floss when gathering heavier fabrics? #over60cosplay #costumer #sewist #cosplayer #sewingtip
When sewing plaids be sure to buy extra fabric to take into account the need to match patterns. #Over60Cosplay #costumer #sewist #cosplayer #sewingtip #plaid

Photo of a silver button gauge to the left of eight gold grommets on top of an unfinished corset that is made from black cotton and has gold metallic stars patterned throughout.
A buttonhole gauge is great for determining grommet spacing when making corset or stays!

Picked up a block of natural local bees wax at the Reading Market Terminal today to soothe some of my unwieldy, tangled thread cones! π§΅πͺπ»π

TIPβ οΈ: Always measure the model before cutting the fabric to avoid any mistakes as well as wasting money to buy extra fabric!

Here's a tip: Some fabrics start to fray as soon as you begin to cut them. You can use a serger OR a close zigzag stitch. Take the time to go along all cut edges for beautiful sturdy seams. #Over60Cosplay #sewist #cosplayer #costumer #sewingtip
Whipped up a quick #sewingtip video on reducing french seam bulk when #sewing a double turned hem! It's a real issue but I can't find anyone talking about it. Maybe everyone else just use super light fabric for french seams like the textbook says π

When I do handwork, I usually put on a movie or TV show that I can listen to, but don't have to actually watch. This is why. π #Over60Cosplay #costumer #sewist #cosplayer #sewingtip
A closeup view of the collar and neck of a shirt. It is a pale pink lace Peter Pan collar with a button and thread to close it.
If ya wanna save money on lace, thrift old curtains! I see them all the time at thrift stores for pretty cheap. A little bit of lace adds a nice vintage touch, like here on my Peter Pan collar. Yes, I'll wear your grandma's curtains!

The easiest way you can save money is by not buying interfacing and just using scrap fabric. You won't see the interfacing so you can use fabric that doesn't perfectly match and scraps are free!

No bias tape maker? No problem! Grab some pins and creative your own. #sewingtip #quilters #mxdomestic
ADAPTING PATTERN: I often "Frankenstein" patterns, ie using parts of different patterns. This time I cut bodice patterns at the waistline so I could make the peplum in a different fabric. Notice I added a seam allowance at the cut to sew them back together. #Over60Cosplay #sewingtip #cosplayer
TEXTURE To make my cosplays "pop," I like to use lots of texture. The light pink fabric is actually dimensional. Tge pink satin is iridescent. Trims were added to cover seams. #Over60Cosplay #costumer #sewist #cosplayer #sewingtip
Want a sewing tip? If you use a zigzag stitch on a raw edge, tack it with a straight line first. It secures your stitching without risking your machine getting locked up or jammed!
Finally working on layer 2, I'm excited for this project!

Sewing tip!
Use a bobbin thread that's not the exact color of your fabric. If you need to rip out a seam it'll be much easier if you can actually see one of the threads.

Sewing 101 tip: When you're beginning a sewing project, be sure to wash the fabric. Natural fabrics (cotton, linen, wool, silk) will shrink. Also, fabrics may be treated with chemicals during manufacturing and can be toxic. #Over60Cosplay #sewist #costumer #cosplayer #sewingtip
