A light teal blue sewing machine from around 1955. It's a single piece of cast iron with moving parts inside, and it's quite heavy. The external controls are all shiny chrome. It's a lovely vintage device.

Despite what looks like decades of neglect, this gorgeous 70 year old Morse Super Dial (R5L) still runs…just not well.

But it will soon!

It's now in pieces on our workbench, about to get its first cleaning in who knows how long.

An excerpt from a service manual for the Pfaff 230 & 332 machines. It reads: From time to time, about once every six month, it is advisable to rinse all moving parts in pure kerosene. This will help maintain the easy running of the machine. Proceed by squirting ample kerosene into all oil holes of the machine, raise the presser foot and run the unthreaded machine at high speed. After oil residues and dirt particles have been washed out, oil the machine and wipe it off. This procedure should be followed regardless whether the machine is used little or not at all. Cleaning and lubricating the sewing hook is instructed on page 64.

Contrary to this instruction in an old Pfaff service manual, we will not be dousing any machine in any amount of kerosene.

It made it easier that they didn't have drop in bobbins, and weighed a TON (no plastic in these old girls) And the old hifi ❤️

Bad thread leads to bad sewing Once upon a time (December), a customer brought their Singer 4411 to the shop. They reported that the machine had started skipping stitches. We gave it the works, a full clean, oil, and tune. Then we tested it and everything worked great. Every type of stitch was neat and even at any speed. Success! Or was it? After the machine got home, the owner let us know that it was still misbehaving.

Which needle should you use when sewing different types of fabrics together? A customer brought us her Singer machine because it kept snarling up under the needle plate. We've all been there and it's always frustrating to have this happen. They did all the right things: cleaned out by the bobbin, rethreaded both top and bottom threads, and even swapped in a new needle. Nothing helped, so they brought the machine to us.

You should use a stretch needle when sewing knit fabric and a sharp needle when sewing woven. But what if you're sewing both at the same time? #Sewing #SewingMachines
