Finally! Took me a while but finally finished #FFXIV - #DawnTrail #SharedFATEs. All that work just to get this umbrella, but I am so happy it's all mine!
I have now finished all #SharedFATEs from #ShadowBringers, #EndWalker & ##DawnTrail.
Time to chill until #FFXIV8.0!
#SharedFates
Got this before my sub ended the other day. Thank you to the hrothgar player who helped me with shared FATEs! 😭🙏
It's so purteh! 🌈✨☂️

This is one of the reasons why we need pro-active, community-oriented risk reduction measures guided by science-informed government. Individuals likely won’t — or can’t even if they want to — take sufficient mitigation efforts on their own. #SharedFates
Colleagues and I with @cplusc.bsky.social have proposed a new way to design disaster insurance for housing. The keys are:
1. comprehensive, community-level risk reduction
2. public disaster insurance (not insurers-of-last-resort)

"one homeowner said, 'I literally have panic attacks everyday. I’ve lost 20 pounds since January 7th. My hair is falling out and I’m scared.'”
This piece really underscores how broken our disaster insurance system is. We desperately need a redesign! #SharedFates

@urbaninstitute.bsky.social finds that federal climate-resilience programs disproportionately invested in counties w/ higher enviro-related bureaucratic capacity — seems to support @cplusc.bsky.social proposal for state clearinghouses for resilience funding #SharedFates

We’re all connected. Let’s start acting like it. #SharedFates #EarthDay
This is an unsurprising outcome given the:
a) extent of LA fires' destruction
b) stop-gap nature of FAIR plan design
As of 2024 insurers can pass these costs on to ratepayers, so rates across the state will rise as a result.
This will keep spiraling until we design a better system. #SharedFates
Interesting flag here on a Newsom proposal to create a new housing & homeless agency in California to better coordinate all state housing work.
It's not unlike what @cplusc.bsky.social proposes for housing disaster risk reduction in our #SharedFates report.

For housing & disaster insurance, we can fund housing resilience & make insurance affordable if those that caused this crisis (eg fossil fuel companies & insurers) & would most benefit from it being fixed (eg mortgage lenders) contribute, instead of shifting the costs to regular people. #SharedFates
With Trump set to visit disaster-hit parts of NC & CA today amid political debates about disaster aid, it’s useful to remember that the more we proactively build resilience & an insurance system that’s a true safety net, the less we need to spend public money on reactive disaster aid. #SharedFates
New data from Treasury & the Nat'l Assn of Insurance Commissioners is yet more evidence that our current home insurance system is failing households across the country. We urgently need a better system that prioritizes housing resilience & affordability. #SharedFates

This points to some of the pitfalls of believing it's just Southern California or Florida that are risky, or that it's just stupid rich people choosing to live in risky coastal areas.
Our fates are much more shared than that, so we should start acting like it.
#SharedFates
A key takeaway: in order to confront the growing housing safety & affordability crisis, we need to understand our fates as shared, and reimagine a home insurance system that reduces risk and provides equitable & fair protection.

When we pool our risk reduction, pooling our risk becomes a different conversation. One about how housing can be protected for people, rather than how insurance companies can keep selling policies.

#SharedFates
Risk pooling certainly is. But when we’re talking about climate-driven disasters that aren’t caused by individuals (except oil company execs) & that individuals can’t prevent, is an individual risk approach really the most effective, let alone ethical, response?
I’d argue we have #SharedFates
We lay out how to do this in our @cplusc.bsky.social #SharedFates report: climateandcommunity.org/research/sha...
Yep. That’s a key conclusion of the @cplusc.bsky.social report out earlier this year. Luckily we also offer big picture solutions for solving this housing affordability and safety crisis.

This conversation between @rhymeswithocean.bsky.social & me about the current failures of our disaster home insurance system and what we can do about it is now up as a podcast!

I’ll also note that @rfelliott.bsky.social was a key intellectual inspiration for many of the solidarity state (by another name) ideas in the #SharedFates report!
Here’s the interview they did on The Dig: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

Garamendi's right that Lara is too industry friendly, but as
@cplusc.bsky.social research demonstrates, the home insurance crisis is bigger than an insurance commissioner's mandate - lawmakers need to lead an overhaul of the private insurance system.

Many climate advocates are rightly distraught at the loss of federal policy opportunities after the election. But all hope is not lost--there are many opportunities for bold action at state levels. @zacjtaylor.bsky.social & I wrote about one such opportunity: jacobin.com/2024/11/home... #SharedFates
Yet more evidence that insurance companies are more interested in making money than protecting homes.
This is why we need a new approach to disaster insurance for households.

In our #SharedFates research with @cplusc.bsky.social, we found that not only do residents of mobile & manufactured homes face obstacles to disaster insurance and recovery funds, they also face difficulties accessing disaster preparedness support. climateandcommunity.org/research/sha...
“Manufactured housing shows how the affordable housing and climate crises collide... Our most affordable housing supply is the most vulnerable to climate disasters and often falls through the cracks during recovery.” - @andrewrumbach.bsky.social

Great to see this critical analysis of “climate risk” data for housing markets.
And @madisoncondon.bsky.social makes a crucial point: so much of the risks and the solutions are collective, so there’s danger in tools like this making it seem like an individual problem.
#SharedFates
Such a clear example of how our disaster insurance system is broken. Separate peril coverage may be good for insurance companies, but for households.

The mess that is home insurance policy in the US is strikingly clear after Helene’s devastation, as @shannonosaka.bsky.social & @mollyhf.bsky.social report. That’s why @cplusc.bsky.social has proposed a rethink of how the whole thing works: climateandcommunity.org/research/sha... #SharedFates
This is a key point of the research on home insurance that
@cplusc.bsky.social just published -- none of us are safe from climate disasters and the systems we currently have to keep homes safe is wholly inadequate to the task. #SharedFates climateandcommunity.org/research/sha...
