A game of Monster Chase in progress. The screenshot shows a grid of 30x16 characters. A dot represents a blank square, the yen symbol the monster and a stick figure is used for the player. * means a square has a gold piece on it. Currently, the player has made 5 moves, collected one gold piece and has a score of 1.

Taking a break from the Pico MZ-80K emulator over December seems to have done wonders for my debugging brain. I think I've finally managed to properly sort the keyboard handling so that the F9 kludge is no longer necessary! Testing so far is encouraging ...

A RC2014 backplane 8 with a RP2040 VGA Terminal Card installed. The card has had an expansion header fitted and a passive buzzer is attached to GPIO23 through it to provide sound for the Pico MZ-80K firmware that has been installed onto it.
Pico MZ-80K release 1.2.0 is now available, including support for the #RC2014 RP2040 VGA Terminal Card.

#SharpMZ80K Christmas 1981. I still have it in working order.
I also recreated it on a #RaspberryPi Pico for #RetroChallenge in October!

At least I've finished just in time to think about #AdventOfCode ... I'll probably pick a suitably old dialect of #Fortran this year ...
Reading emulated floppies on Pico MZ-80K seems about right now, but writing -that's not working very well at all. Enough for me to make a bootable disk, but with nothing on it.
Current theory - there's a signal I'm missing that controls stopping a write after x sectors

A cartoon from the Sharp Disk BASIC manual for the MZ-80K. A floppy disk is telling a user that the pencil they are using to write the disk label with is too hard, and that it should be "the soft one".
The quest to emulate 5 1/4" floppy disks on the Pico MZ-80K continues ...
