A view across the River Thames from Shornemead Marshes, a few miles east of Gravesend, Kent. Landscape format: the bottom section of the image shows the grass river bank - a couple of bushes to the left, with a small group of semi-wild ponies grazing at the edge of the river bank. Long shadows. Above the bank, the river, grey and largely featureless. On the horizon, the north bank of the river, low, with Tilbury B power station just to the left of centre: two blocks with chimneys above them. The power station has since been demolished and the site now houses a roll on roll off cargo terminal. Above that, roughly half of the image, the sky is filled with puffy cloud, blue grey, with the sun shining into it.
The ponies had a wide area to roam and graze (and reproduce)...several miles of river bank from the edge of Gravesend. Taken with a Nikon D7000 and 18.0-105.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, 20 October 2014.

An lone angler on the River Thames at Shornemead, a few miles east of Gravesend, Kent. Landscape format, the picture in in 4 'strips'. At the bottom, an uneven block of black, the bank of the river, with an angler holding a rod - river bank and angler in silhouette. Above them a strip of bright water with Shornemead Light to the left and the base of the former Shornemead Lighthouse to the right, both in silhouette. The third strip is a hazy view of Gravesend, with a jetty in front of it and the town and a low hill behind. These are in mid grey. Above, in light grey, the sky. roughly half of the image. Shot 'against the light' hence the silhouettes. Taken using a Nikon D7000 and Tamron 70.0-300.0 mm f/4.0-5.6 on the 14th September 2014.

Taken 23 January 2014. On the south shore of the River Thames, about 3 miles east of Gravesend. A concrete "hard" below the ruin of Shornemead Fort, with rocks and rubble leading down to the water. It is low tide. Landscape format: the lower half of the photo shows the flat concrete expanse, to the right a man made banking and, just visible, the facade of Shornemead Fort. The "hard" was - reputedly - built to aid embarkation of troops for D-Day, I don't know for sure ! Above, the sky, with pleasant white cloud. To the left, a small part of the river is shown, with Shornemead Light standing near the horizon. Shornemead Fort was one of 3 built to prevent French incursion; the other two are down river, one on the north bank and accessible, the other, directly across the river, not so and flooded. Shornemead Fort was destroyed by the British Army in the 1970s. Taken 11 years ago using a Nikon D7000 with 18.0-105.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens.

Another shot of Shornemead Lighthouse, 2-3 miles east of Gravesend, taken 12 October 2003. The lighthouse was removed and replaced latert that year, having been erected in 1913. It's now at the Port Of London Depot upriver at Denton, Gravesend. The lighthouse is shown on its base, just off the river bank, with a small part of its walkway visible. The walkway, fencing around the base of the lighthouse and the lighthouse itself are all painted red, although the colour is a little faded. The lighthouse is of metal construction, two lower sections skeletal in construction, two upper section, including the light, are solid. It is 14 metres high. The sky, behind, is largely blue with strands of cloud. Only the concrete base remains, now.

Shornemead Lighthouse and its walkway. The light is at the top of an iron tower, its base surrounded by fencing with barbed wire at the top of the fence. A walkway leads from the river bank to the tower. The structure is painted red, the colour somewhat faded. It stands against a blue sky with white cloud.
The lighthouse stood from 1913 until 2003, when it was removed: it is now at the Port Of London Authority complex at Denton, Gravesend, a few miles upriver. It was removed due to erosion of the river bank and, presumably, age. The lighthouse has been restored and painted, revealing a copper dome not visible in my photo. It was replaced on the river by a red & White column light. Taken in 2003 using my first digital SLR, a Pentax *istD, which I still have. It still works...
