Shornemead Lighthouse and its walkway. The light is at the top of an iron tower, its base surrounded by fencing with barbed wire at the top of the fence. A walkway leads from the river bank to the tower. The structure is painted red, the colour somewhat faded. It stands against a blue sky with white cloud.
The lighthouse stood from 1913 until 2003, when it was removed: it is now at the Port Of London Authority complex at Denton, Gravesend, a few miles upriver. It was removed due to erosion of the river bank and, presumably, age. The lighthouse has been restored and painted, revealing a copper dome not visible in my photo. It was replaced on the river by a red & White column light. Taken in 2003 using my first digital SLR, a Pentax *istD, which I still have. It still works...

Shornemead Lighthouse, in dark silhouette, on the River Thames and to the right, Tilbury B power station, in pale grey silhouette. The lighthouse was removed soon after and while its base remains, the lighthouse itself - restored - stands at the Port Of London Authority site at Denton, Gravesend, a few miles up river (it no longer functions, of course). The power station has been demolished and Tilbury Docks now uses the space it occupied. The photo was taken on 6 July 2003 with my first digital camera, an Olympus CZ5050 (CZ - compact zoom) a 5mp rangefinder. Lovely little camera...
