Short-billed Dowitchers have long bills that makes me wonder how long-billed dowitchers can stand up. In this photo, a single dowitcher stands in mid-frame, facing right. The water of the salt panne hides most of the legs. The dowitcher is moving, causing ripples in the otherwise still water.

🌎 Short-billed dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus) The Short-billed dowitcher is a stocky, medium-sized shorebird of the Americas, with a long, slightly decurved bill. In breeding plumage, males are beautifully patterned with rich orange, brown, and black, while females are more subdued. They probe mudflats with their bills in a rapid, sewing-machine-like motion to feed on invertebrates. During migration and winter, they form large flocks and can be found on coastal mudflats, marshes, and agricultural fields.
