Let’s see if we can change somebody’s life for the better today. I want to tell you about Areeba Fatima, a remarkable young journalist from Pakistan who's fighting against incredible odds to tell the truth in one of the world's most dangerous places for reporters.

She was recently accepted into Columbia University’s prestigious yearlong post-graduate journalism program. She even won a $90,000 scholarship from Columbia that effectively covers a significant chunk of the (insane) tuition, but that still leaves room and board, fees, travel, and other costs that add up to an additional $85,000. Columbia, given its pathetic capitulation to the Trump administration, frankly doesn’t even deserve to host someone as decent and talented as Areeba. But she has earned it, so let’s see if we can get her over the hump.

That’s where we (and you) come in.

Born into a low-income family in Karachi where girls are often married off at 16, Areeba instead became an investigative journalist and activist. While still a teenager, she drafted Pakistan's first anti-harassment policy for educational institutions. Now, she juggles two jobs while supporting her ailing parents and putting her youngest sibling through college.

In a world that often feels like it's spiraling, helping Areeba get to Columbia is something concrete we can do. We can literally change the trajectory of this brave journalist's life. We can help someone who's risking everything to pursue truth get the tools and education she needs.

I'm asking you to chip in whatever you can. $5, $20, $100 - it all adds up. If enough of us pitch in, we can make this happen for Areeba. And I want to be crystal clear: 100% of all donations will go directly to Areeba to support her studies at Columbia. Every single dollar will help her achieve this dream.

After Columbia, she plans to launch Pakistan's first data-based investigations platform - bringing transparency to a media landscape where seven journalists were killed in just the first half of 2024. Even at such a young age, she has already done groundbreaking work – she's tracked Pakistani artillery shells being shipped to Ukraine despite official denials – confirming a story we first broke – she has exposed election rigging, and she participated in international investigations that exposed political corruption worth billions.

When everything feels dark, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is help light someone else's path forward. Every penny you give will go directly toward her education, this is not a joint fundraiser that will also support Drop Site.

HELP SEND AREEBA TO COLUMBIA
Please consider sharing Areeba's fundraising page with others in your network who might be interested in supporting a brave journalist's journey. Spreading the word is just as valuable and helps us reach more potential supporters.

Let's do this together,

Ryan

P.S. On April 10, we’ll be doing our book delivery in Washington, D.C. We bought 535 copies of Refaat Alareer’s “If I Must Die” and will be handing one each to every member of Congress. If you’d like to help, please fill out this form, and we’ll send details of where we’re meeting, as well as the happy hour meetup we’ll be hosting afterwards. If you previously emailed us and said you’d help, we’ll be reaching out to you soon with details.
