I've been fiddling around and have set up a stand alone section on the website as I work my way through Nelsons Letters and Dispatches.

Back to transcribing the Victory’s 1804 signal log—yes, people do that!
I’ve hit the “on this day” stage, which is oddly satisfying. Some odd timings though…
Signal 221 calls for surgeons aboard, then shortly later 214 calling for lieutenant—something’s afoot.

That one time I got to read a signal log from VICTORY, dated 1804, while cross-referencing a period signal book…
Spine-chilling stuff. The past felt so close.

Flicking through some 1799 Captain’s letters and found this gem—a flag officer’s set of signals. These were issued locally to captains before standardised fleet-wide signals came into use. A great glimpse into pre-1800 naval comms!

📜 Spotted this in an 1805 signal reference…
What do we think this says?
"Topmainhead"?
Can’t find it on any rigging diagrams so far — maybe a period-specific way of describing a mast position?
Signal nerds, thoughts?

Part of me wants to work through Victory's signal log from 1804 and transfer it into a online document.
Talk me out of it!

Interestingly stumbled across this lovely piece.
It shows what other ships of the British fleet were to fly and were to assist with easy recognition.
Also held by the National Maritime Museum.
