Signal is end to end encryption. This means the weakest points are the end. If your devices aren’t secure, your chats aren’t secure either.

Keep in mind which devices are logged in and accessible. Can a teenager open your computer and read your messages? When in doubt, lock them out!

Download the Signal app for desktop. This can be used to extend the chats from your phone to your PC. However, you can also organize them as different accounts for better chat management.

If you have to bring your phone, leave your group chat account at home!

Many people use signal links to share their contact information. This has become very clutch, however, it presents a very obvious security leak.

After someone uses your signal link, return to settings, click your name, click “QR CODE or Link” and click “Reset” at the bottom. All safe.

Pin things in the app by turning off disappearing timers, posting, then re-activating disappearing timers.

This can be further improved upon in the group settings page where you can organize notes and hyperlinks for others to play catch-up.

Don’t use the “mutual aid chat” “business chat” or otherwise unrelated chat in leu of a day-chat.

If you MUST bring your phone to an event or high risk area, where it has a chance to be taken by police, don’t drag down a bunch of uninvolved volunteers into your grand jury deposition.

Your disappearing timers mean nothing if someone is screenshotting. Or if their push notifications stores all your texts. Privacy is comprehensive.

If you don’t know someone or they make you uncomfortable, and insist on adding you to “the one big group chat”, etiquette is to decline.

If they do so anyways, leave, block and delete. If you join insecure chats, remember to speak how you would like it to be read in a court deposition.
