Due to the shear size and cost of the set, Fairbanks would later reuse portions of the set from “Robin Hood” (1922) in “The Thief of Bagdad” (1924)

The massive castle set was designed by Lloyd Wright, son of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It featured a real concrete floor and a drawbridge constructed out of wood-covered steel.

A noted athlete & stuntman, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. insisted on doing all of his own stunts b/c he felt audiences would be able to tell if it wasn’t him. This led to the elaborate set to be made in a way that helped him achieve these feats

While not too dissimilar to “A Trip to the Moon” (e.g. men going on an adventure), “Robinson Crusoe” is really sophisticated for a Méliès film from 1902
#SilentFlickerSunday #RobinsonCrusoe #GeorgesMelies
Prior to 2011 it was believed that “Robinson Crusoe” (1902)🇫🇷 was a mostly lost film as only a few scenes had ever been found intact. A copy of the entire film was then donated to The Cinémathèque Française film archive where it was restored
#SilentFlickerSunday #RobinsonCrusoe #GeorgesMelies
It’s based on English writer Daniel Defoe's 1719 book of the same name, which can be read for free here (archive.org/details/cu31...)

First up we have “Les Aventures de Robinson Crusoë” AKA “Robinson Crusoe” (1902)🇫🇷 (youtu.be/oWHtn6dr1JE?...) directed by and starring French wizard of early film Georges Méliès.

And they’d both pass away far too young in the early 1930s (Mabel at only 36 in 1930 & Roscoe at 43 in 1933)
#SilentFlickerSunday #MabelNormand #RoscoeArbuckle #SilentFilm
Despite all of their trailblazing talents, both Mabel Normand and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle would hit career lows (Normand w/relationship & drug scandals the stress of which worsening her recurrent tuberculosis; Arbuckle w/a career ending sex scandal)
#SilentFlickerSunday #MabelNormand #RoscoeArbuckle
And finally, “He Did and He Didn’t” (1916) (youtu.be/5naCRo-i1JI?...) is actually more of a dramedy VS the usual slapstick comedy or RomCom that Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle and Mabel Normand were known for
