A digital art lineup of my designs of the Court Kids from Sir Callie & the Champions of Helston by Esme Symes-Smith.

From left to right, there’s Callie, a kid with messy orange-ginger hair wearing an emerald green tunic & confidently wielding a sword, Willow, a kid with short black hair wearing a grey & black tunic & holding an old leather book, Elowen, a girl with long, wavy, neat brown hair wearing a blue medieval-esque dress holding a magical flame, & Edwyn, a boy with short, wavy, neat brown hair wearing a scarlet red tunic & warily/guiltily wielding a sword.

I forgot to share! With my interpretations of the Court Kids from Sir Callie complete (at least, the base Book 1 versions anyway… 👀), here’s all of their fullbodies together (adjusted a bit to get their heights about right!)

A digital comic page depicting a scene between Callie & Elowen from Sir Callie and the Champions of Helston by Esme Symes-Smith.

The text at the top reads, “Sir Callie and The Champions of Helston. Chapter 15, Page 171. Dialogue & characters by Esme Symes-Smith. Art by Rachel Martin, @CartoonCreatureLover.

The comic begins with Elowen looking down at Callie, who is offscreen, with her arms crossed, saying, “Well, it’s true. I’m not going to lie to you. Friends tell each other harsh truths.” Callie responds, looking away from her, “Wish you’d tell me nice lies instead.” Elowen suddenly bends down, getting close to Callie’s face, both blushing, with Callie looking surprised as El says while smiling sweetly, “Find someone else.” They look away from El, face still red, “Don’t you have needlework to stab?” She confidently responds, already a couple steps back from them, “I’m a prodigy. I can leave my lessons whenever I like.” Callie points at themself, “To come & bother me?” She turns to face them, placing her hands over her heart, & playfully responds, blushing, “To bestow upon you the company you so desperately crave.” Elowen dips into an elegant curtsy, & playfully says with one eye still open, sparkles all around her, & face still blushing, “Man cannot live by a sword’s companionship alone.” Callie stares at you, the audience, completely unamused & tired of this already.

Finally! Page 2 (of 6?) of the Book 1, Chapter 15, Sir Callie comic is done!

It’s very fitting I managed to finish this part in time for Valentine’s Day, haha! I had so much fun drawing all the Elowens, I’m not sure which one is my favorite!

A digital, fullbody, illustration of my interpretation of Edwyn from the Sir Callie book series by Esme Symes-Smith, more heavily based on the series’ descriptions the character.

Edwyn is a 12 year old boy with short, wavy, neat brown hair that’s been slicked back. He has snowy pale skin, blue eyes, & a fresh scar across his farthest cheek. He’s wearing a deep scarlet red tunic with a gold trim, a golden pin on his chest, a dull & off-white undershirt, & dull brown belt, gloves, boots, & pants.

He stands defensively, looking away with tensed brows, whilst wielding a dark & dull, but very pointy, sword.

Edwyn stands against a brown background, framed by a darker brown rectangle, which is decorated with four-pointed stars, taken from the Sir Callie logo, at each corner, & triangular pointed shapes; the frame coincidentally resembles a fantasy spellbook.

The comic begins with Elowen looking down at Callie, who is looking up at her while covering up an open blank-paged sketchbook, as she sets a plate of biscuits on the desk. Elowen says, “Take a break. You look exhausted. You must’ve been studying since dawn.” Callie says, “Haha.” & thinks, “But I feel it too. Must be something in the weather.” They yawn & put a biscuit in their mouth, getting lost in their thoughts as they chew, thinking, “Lemon. Score. Or maybe it’s all those late nights finally catching up with me. Either way—” Elowen interrupts their thought, startling them with her cold hand pressed against their forehead; she says, “Well, you’re not feverish. But you do look pale.” Callie scoots away from her, their cheeks reddened & less pale than before, saying, “Rude.” but thinks, “Usually I hate being fussed over, but apparently I mind it a whole lot less when it’s Elowen.” Elowen looks down at them annoyed, her hand pulled back from their forehead.

I’ve been wanting to try making comics for YEARS now, & FINALLY got around to cleaning up one of my MANY notecard thumbnails; this one adapting a piece of what’s probably my favorite chapter in Book 1 of Sir Callie!

(Part 1 of, maybe, 6? We’ll see!)

A digital, fullbody, illustration of a stockier interpretation of Callie from the Sir Callie book series by Esme Symes-Smith, more heavily based on the series’ descriptions the character.

Callie is a 12 year old kid with messy orange-ginger hair that’s styled with bangs & pulled back into a low ponytail. They have warm, beige, freckled skin, hazel eyes, & is wearing a dark cool-green cloak, an emerald green medieval tunic with a copper trim, a creme-colored undershirt, reddish-brown pants with roughed up knees, & dark, red-brown, leather gloves, boots, & knot belt.

They stand determinedly, a tooth missing from their smile, wielding Satin, their sword. Satin has been interpreted as a leaf-bladed sword with a green, gem-like, diamond-shaped, dragon pommel & the sword’s name visibly engraved into the blade; otherwise, Satin resembles the book cover’s design.

Callie stands against a soft orange background, framed by a darker orange rectangle, which is decorated with four-pointed stars, taken from the Sir Callie logo, at each corner, & triangular pointed shapes; the frame coincidentally resembles a fantasy spellbook.

Sir Callie 2.0 (but with their cloak this time!)

I also made an alt version of this piece with the cloak Callie gets at the end of Book 1 to complete their whole outfit!

I absolutely love how it turned out!

A digital, fullbody, illustration of my interpretation of Elowen from the Sir Callie book series by Esme Symes-Smith, more heavily based on the series’ descriptions the character.

Elowen is a 12 year old girl with long, wavy, neat brown hair; a lighter blue bow ties it together into a contained low ponytail. She has snowy pale skin, icy blue eyes, & very faint freckles on her nose. She’s wearing a navy blue ribbon around her neck like a choker necklace, a matching implified, navy blue, sleeveless, cotehardie-inspired overdress with a long sleeved, cerulean blue, coteharder-inspired underdress, an off-white apron over her dress skirts, lighter blue tights or socks that peek out beneath her long skirts, & 14th century inspired, black, leather, flat shoes.

She stands confidently, smiling, one hand on her hip & the other holds up a magic flame.

A modified version of the "There's Only One More Sleep 'Til Christmas" meme, from The Muppet Christmas Carol; this version is modified to be about the release of Sir Callie and the Final Stand by Esme Symes-Smith.

In the first image, Kermit the Frog says, "There's only one more sleep 'til..."
In the second image, it's been modified so he says, "Sir Callie and the Final Stand," with a large image of the book's cover with a golden glow around it.
In the third image, Kermit the Frog stares off, & it's clarified in brackets that he's "screaming internally."

Two, traditional art, pencil doodles of Callie’s face, both with a different expression, on a solid white notecard. Callie is from the Sir Callie series by Esme Symes-Smith.

On the upper left is an annoyed or irritated Callie with their brows furrowed, their nose wrinkled, & a tense vein symbol floating above their head.

On the lower right is an alarmed or suprised Callie, their hair either blowing in the wind or swaying from them jumping back at whatever alarmed them. Their eyes are wide with very small pupils, with no irises or eyeshines. A drop of sweat rolls down their temple, & their mouth is open & wrinkled, as if they were gasping in surprise. A spiky emanata floats above their head to visualize Callie’s surprised feeling.

A thin rectangular piece of paper sits between the drawings as a username watermark for the image, it reads, “@cartooncreaturelover.”

Four, traditional art, pencil doodles of Callie’s face, each with a different expression, on a solid white notecard. Callie is from the Sir Callie series by Esme Symes-Smith.

From left to right, there’s a simple smiling Callie, their smile shows off a missing tooth. Next is an angry Callie with their nose wrinkled, eyes squinting, & a tense vein symbol floating above their head. Next, is a “horrified & angry” Callie with a wrinkled nose, small pupils, & no eyeshines staring downwards, & a smitten Callie with a big goofy smile & darker blush on their face, staring downwards with a heart floating above their head.

A digital, fullbody, illustration of my interpretation of Willow from the Sir Callie book series by Esme Symes-Smith, more heavily based on the series’ descriptions the character.

Willow is a 12 year old kid with short black hair. He has pale pink skin, dark brown eyes, a beauty mark on the left cheek, below his eye, & is wearing a black & silver-trimmed medieval tunic with a grey-pink undershirt, a black leather belt, grey pants, & dark grey leather boots. The top third of the tunic is grey with a teardrop pattern. His knuckles are noticeably bruised & roughed up.

He stands in a friendly but shy manner, hugging an old leather book to his chest, looking away from the viewer with a soft smile.

Willow stands against a pink background, framed by a darker pink rectangle, which is decorated with four-pointed stars, taken from the Sir Callie logo, at each corner, & triangular pointed shapes; the frame coincidentally resembles a fantasy spellbook.

A modified version of the "Polyamorous"/ "Not What I'm Called" meme, originally by possessable on Tumblr, this version edited to feature Callie from the Sir Callie book series, the image of Callie taken from the cover of Sir Callie & the Champions of Helston.

Callie says, "hey guys"
A longer haired person standing at the front of a group of people points at them, shouting, "CALLIDEN"
Callie shouts in response, "NOT WHAT I'M CALLED"

A digital, fullbody, illustration of a stockier interpretation of Callie from the Sir Callie book series by Esme Symes-Smith, based on the book cover’s design for the character.

Callie is a 12 year old kid with orange-ginger hair that’s styled with bangs & pulled back into a low ponytail. They have warm, beige, freckled skin, hazel eyes, & is wearing a red bandana around their neck, a turquoise-blue medieval tunic with a creme-colored undershirt, reddish-brown pants with roughed up knees, & dark, red-brown, leather gloves, boots, & knot belt.

They stand determinedly, smiling, wielding Satin, their sword. Satin has been interpreted as a leaf-bladed sword with a gem-like, diamond-shaped, dragon pommel & the sword’s name visibly engraved into the blade; otherwise, Satin closely resembles the book cover’s design.

Callie stands against a sky blue background, framed by a darker sky blue rectangle, which is decorated with four-pointed stars, taken from the Sir Callie logo, at each corner, & triangular pointed shapes; the frame coincidentally resembles a fantasy spellbook.

Here's something I rarely make (but might start making a little more often); fanart!

I've designed my interpretation of Callie (& their sword) from Book 1 of the Sir Callie series! I *love* this character & *had* to draw them!

They love all that and they love of course having queer characters and knowing that we're not alone. It's such a joy to have a beautiful, inspiring, and entertaining book that is queer to read to them. #booktok #mgbooktok #bookrec #mgbookrec #sircallie
