NE local authority & NHS leaders are backing a #SmokefreeGeneration, with 7 in 10 adults supporting raising the tobacco age of sale.
Whether it's for your health, your family, or your finances, today is the perfect opportunity to take that first step toward quitting for good. This No Smoking Day is especially significant as the landmark Tobacco and Vapes Bill nears the final stages of becoming law - and if you've followed my work you'll know the huge part I've played, alongside colleagues at Fresh and ASH in scrutinising the legislation so it encompasses everything that it needs to. The historic legislation is designed to: • Create a Smoke-Free Generation: By making it illegal to ever sell tobacco to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, we are ensuring today's children never face the cycle of addiction. Crack Down on Youth Vaping: New powers will allow the government to regulate vape flavours, packaging, and displays to stop them from being marketed to children. Protect Public Spaces: The Bill will extend smoke-free laws to specific outdoor areas like playgrounds and outside schools and hospitals. The impact is massive. Smoking remains the UK's number one preventable cause of death, claiming around 80,000 lives every year. By passing this Bill, we aren't just saving lives-we're protecting the NHS and building a healthier future for everyone.
