About 50 sailplanes are tied down for the night, awaiting the next contest day.
A sailplane pilot sits in the front of a grid full of sailplanes, awaiting a tow. Multiple tow planes are used to get as many as 50 sailplanes in the air within one hour.

Today, sailplane pilots are heading to Ephrata WA, for the US Region 8 Championships. For a week, you are tested on your ability to fly, with as much precision and speed as you can. I was lucky to win my first one, but didn't even come close after that. ssa.org/racing-sailplanes/
I'm going with #soaringsaturday for this #turkeyvulture #inflight

The finale of Act II is here!! I hope you enjoy the last #SoaringSaturday for a bit while I get my bearings to write the final Act III. For now, here’s my version of the tragic pain that is #serumbowl… with a twist 😈 #eruri ⚔️🪽

Chapter 6
An interim chapter that I often forget about, but I think Erwin allowing himself to break down in front of Levi after the Cull is a crucial turning point in their relationship. And also, the flirting they allow when Erwin is sleep deprived is SO!! #soaringsaturday #eruri

A glider is pictured ready for take-off. A towplane is in position with towline taught, while a wing runner signals to the towplane that the pilot is ready.
The pilot from Foxtrot Uniform has given the sign to his wing man that he's ready for launch. In turn, the wing runner swings his white hat in a circle, a sign to the towpilot to hit the throttle.

Wing Runner - The unsung hero of a glider launch!
Not only do they help run the wing on take-off, they might have other duties, including pre-flight, tow connection and communication between tow pilot and sailplane pilot.

I never had a problem with it on grass fields. I just cocked my down wing forward a bit, full opposite aileron, rudder the direction of your fuselage to avoid side load on tail wheel. Two seconds and your tail is flying and on one wheel. Just for you I'll post my wing-runner pic on #SoaringSaturday
Sailplane with one wing removed from the fuselage
The sailplane wing is held by the spar root on a dolly. You just roll the wing in and lock it in place inside the trailer.
The sailplane fuselage, minus the wings, sits on a wheeled dolly on the tongue of the trailer. The final step is rolling it into the trailer between the wings.
Sailplane trailers are very light and easy to tow. Loaded with plane, the weight on these are around 1500 lbs total for an average sailplane.
#SoaringSaturday
If you aren't flying, or want to transport your plane, they come apart and fit in a thirty foot long trailer. Two people is all it takes.
This also comes in handy for when you land in a farmer's field and need to have someone come and get you.

In soaring, most put an identifier on their tails for contests, or as a call sign. You can do it through a national register or make one up.
When I flew, I had "15B - One Five Bravo" and "VM - Victor Mike"
I'm not going to say I wanted "FU", but if it was available...

Two weeks ago I started my #SoaringSaturday posts.
Today - Wave Soaring! A strong wind striking mountains can create wave patterns. Often it creates secondary wave and more.
Pic - Final look at Mt Rainier after a wave attempt day. WA state record is 32,270 ft off Rainier.

Ridge Lift - Rising or maintaining altitude by using the wind that is striking the mountains. It takes a 15-20mph wind to do this. The idea is that you must fly close to the terrain to get the full effect. There is an amount of danger here, especially in stronger winds.
In the photo, I am flying with a friend for hours along a 20 mile long ridge running north from Mt Rainier. We have to stay close to this ridge, going back and forth, or risk loss of altitude and the need to return to the airfield.
It's #SoaringSaturday!
How do we stay up without an engine? Last week we talked cumulus clouds and thermals.

In the middle of the night~
How do we stay up and travel? The most common way is by using thermals. Chart courtesy Soaring Society of America. An average sailplane can lose 120-150 ft/min. You are offsetting that. In Western WA thermals are usually 200-600 ft/m. In Eastern WA I have experienced 1500 ft/m! What goes up comes down! On the outside of the cumulus cloud are downdrafts. We speed up to get through them, pull up and circle in lift and speed up through the sink as we leave.
This is the view from cloud base. The idea is to find the next cumulus cloud in the direction that you want to travel. The stronger the thermals, the faster you will be able to travel cross-country. If you can link cumulous clouds together in a row, it's called a cloudstreet. Under a cloudstreet you fly under the clouds in a straight line and slow down in lift and speed up in sink. We also call it porpoising. I have been in cloudstreets that were so strong I was running at redline through lift and sink to avoid going up into the clouds.
I used to fly and race sailplanes.
My most asked question was, How do we stay up and go cross-country?
