Large yellow poster with a image of Dr Pap looking pensive with smaller images of women holding children, a microscope, and stamp
Today for #SomethingBig is a poster advertising Dr Papanicolaou’s (inventor of the Pap smear) commemorative stamp #Archives30
Today's #Archive30 is #SomethingBig - so another map! Yates's 1799 Map of Glamorgan shows a county on the cusp of industrial take-off. It's sold out but available digitally at www.southwalesrecordsociety.co.uk/Downloads/Ya...
This is a very large scrapbook, compiled by former British Museum Principal Librarian Sir Henry Ellis - pencil for scale! There are many big things in the Museum’s archive! #Archive30 #SomethingBig #BritishMuseum #Archive
Large black rectangular board with red text on it being held by bespectacled man such that only his head, hands and feet are visible. The image has been rotated from portrait to landscape format so that he is in a horizontal position with his feet attached to the ‘wall’ on the left (really the floor) with no other apparent means of support.
How’s this for #SomethingBig?
A display board of strike & unemployment stats (1320 x 910 mm if you must know) from the Report/IFL photo bureau archive, ‘modelled’ here by one of our gravity-defying archivists.

Whymper tent set up in the club lecture room
Advertising image of a Whymper tent
Today's #Archive30 is #SomethingBig
There were a few options - mostly paintings - but we've chosen the item in our collection that is a) the largest and b) the least seen
The Whymper Tent!
Seen here in 2015 to commemorate the 150th anniversary ascent of the Matterhorn 🧵
Our St John's Bible series are pretty big and absolutely incredible. We frequently host tour groups to just spend time going through these wonderful illustrations. You can learn more about the Bibles via: libraryguides.berea.edu/SJB/about .

Crowd standing around a multi-story bonfire
For many years, a massive bonfire was a key Homecoming tradition at University of Nebraska at Kearney. Unsurprisingly, it was eventually ended due to safety concerns.

Recruitment poster resting on top of a black drawer display unit, with walls and a door in the background. The poster shows a battered green wooden door with the top line of a red-on-white 'WANTED' poster on it. The main text at the bottom is in white and reads. "Men who want a career with a sense of purpose, a chance to help and protect people. Men who can command respect. For such men the rewards are great and the future is secure. Have you got what it takes to be a London Policeman? / LONDON'S POLICE / A CAPITAL CAREER / Write: New Scotland Yard, D5. London SW1". And yes, the Met had started recruiting women officers decades before the poster was printed ...
We wouldn't say our #SomethingBig is huge, but we didn't have a large enough table and it required a stepladder to photograph it. Drawer unit for scale ... #Archive30 #AbsoluteUnit #ExploreYourArchives
The bottom of a document with some text, the date and seal held down by 2 glass weights.
Part of an outsize scroll covering the length of a table with a glass weight and chair to the side of the table.
Medical practitioners in 17th century Edinburgh were often at loggerheads. Here's 6 metres of grievances by the surgeons about the apothecaries for having the audacity to "practice the art of chirurgery". Suffice to say they were absolutely livid!

Large map, showing a river, several roads, streets with houses and many plots of land.
This early 19th century map of part of the liberties of Belper, Duffield and Makeney is one of the largest we have, measuring just over 3m by just over 4m. You can unroll it in the Searchroom if you really want to, but the digital copy is much easier to look at!

Collage of images of hard copy catalogues and screenshot of an online catalogue
#SomethingBig is this catalogue of sales catalogues [D/ENS]. Originally a handwritten draft, we typed it up during the pandemic. It needed a lot of adjustment to input to our online catalogue but it's now available. The hard copy version is huge! #Archive30 #ArchivalAchievements
Chart listing chemical elements and their blowpipe and distinguishing characteristics.
Close up of some of the elements featured including iron, copper and silver
For today's #Archive30 we're looking at #SomethingBig and this chart of chemical analysis by W. Little fits the bill. The chart also gives details of blowpipe and distinguishing characteristics for each element. It measures approx 95cm x 70cm.
We are putting away this rather large item which was out for our borough’s 60th anniversary last week: letters patent of 1823 creating Nicholas Vansittart Baron Bexley, given under writ of the Privy Seal with the great seal of George IV attached. #SomethingBig #Archive30
#Archive30 #SomethingBig These enormous scrap books contain all the catalogues and advertising material from Hardy Patent Pick of Sheffield, along with notices from the factory. They made tools for every possible application, from gardening to coal mining. @arascot.bsky.social #GKNarchive
#Archive30 #SomethingBig: The "Rettig'sche Schulbank" is a school desk system that was patented in 1893 and was used all over Germany after that. The bench has a handy joint on the floor so that you can tilt it to clean underneath – how brilliant is that?

This 1940's proposal for a new ring road in #york that never came to fruition, needs eight tables to be displayed in our reading room and requires two of our archives team to unroll it safely.
