THE BREEDERS | CANNONBALL USA 1993 #UncoolTwo50 822 (original rank 5 ⬇️3) USA 9/34 284 points (1 x 14J, 4 x 12, 2 x 11) 100: 5th April (8th) 200: 12th May (21st) 1993: 1/1; 1990s: 4/8 Well if it isn’t our very own canon-ball, smashing through Acclaimed Music’s castle walls. Ranked a lowly #281 over there, and that clearly had us fired up. This was the original #Song51 in #Uncool50 (1977-2022), so while I always expected it to improve in U250 (1977 - 1999), I never saw 5th place coming. Here it’s slipped to 8th for the era, but in some ways this is a more impressive performance. ‘Cannonball’ beat two of the four gold medallists. It scored 30 more points, from 15 fewer participants, in a challenge covering four eras and not just one. It achieved three top picks, not just one. And you’ll see it couldn’t have done much to stop the three songs overtaking it. I picked it, in my last head to head decider, but ranked it in the 40s. Partly knowing it wouldn’t need the help after the showing in U250. It probably is my favourite song involving Kim Deal, even if ‘Gigantic’ captured the crowd that bit more at Primavera this month. I think what surprises me most is how convincingly it’s beaten the other obvious US alt-rock crossover, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, especially this time round. Streaming and YouTube numbers suggest the next generation would turn out a different result. But it’s clearly right in our sweet spot.

it was the original #Song51 in #Uncool50... so yes I am equally stunned by its popularity on here. Certainly if Kim Deal at Primavera was anything to go by, the kids prefer Gigantic!
Wouldn't have made much difference tbh - in points terms it's equidistant between no. 25 and the actual #Song51 anyway.

In an unofficial capacity, as one of her other ones was my #Song51, I have records of two previous votes in which that one was her *clear* winner, and I don't wish to be mean.
I am flabbergasted how much better this is doing than Blank Space. I find it utterly inexplicable.
(because two of my serious contenders didn't qualify, two others are non-singles, and my #Song51 from 2014 is also in the mix...
So even 'DOMO', which made this list, has only a slim chance)

Though I had a different "official" #Song51, one key thing I did was overlook my next best of 78, 79 and 80 in favour of the 90s, because I was conscious of the inevitable early bias.
They were all Rodgers/Edwards and this was the best of the three.

I'm taking a wild punt on Smells Like Teen Spirit being #Song51. It racked up a fair few votes (myself included) but the general votership has seemingly soured on grunge, which may be enough to keep Nirvana just barely out of the top 50.
