Say hello to 'Midnight', an endangered Spectacled Flying-fox caught and released so we could put a tracking collar on as part of our science monitoring program.

20 flying foxes have tracking collars. One bat flies 70km each way for a nightly forage.

Chattering in the treetops: It's baby season for Spectacled Flying-foxes and a vulnerable time for this endangered species given their maternity roosts in residential areas.

We've created this FAQs page: terrain.org.au/baby-bat-sea...

Yes, spectacled flying foxes are noisy and drop poo everywhere. But our rainforests need them Without urgent action, a species that helps hold rainforests together might be gone for good.

A call to action on bat welfare: We have a responsibility to protect flying foxes. Adequate & sustained gov funding 4 community education, bat conservation (preparation to minimise mass deaths due to severe weather events) & research urgently needed

Spectacled flying foxes (Pteropus conspicillatus) have distinctive straw-coloured fur around the eyes which gives them their name. The Baby Yoda-lookalikes have the smallest known distribution and population of the four Australian mainland Pteropus flying foxes. They play an important role in the rain forest as pollinators and seed dispersers.

An endangered Australian mammal, it's found in north-east Queensland and on the Torres Strait Islands, as well as in Papua New Guinea, parts of Indonesia and the Solomon Islands. Surveys have shown a dramatic decline of over 90% in the population of the Spectacled Flying-fox over in a 15-year period from 1985-2000, going from 820,000 to just 80,000 over this time.
