New ban on dangerous rodent poisons is lifeline for our native animals Rat and mouse baits are an everyday product. But these chemicals can persist in the tissues of rodents that eat them for months and poison native animals.

I really didn't think this would finally happen in Australia. Our country has the worst record for species extinction on the planet.

What an incredibly sad article.

And how awful that Australia continues in it’s shameful place as the top country in the world for #mammal extinctions.

What a legacy we’ve lost 😞

We've lived on this property for 13 years and I've been trying to catch a quoll on my trail cams basically since we moved in. Never seen one. But today one turned up and tried to break into the (fortunately secure) aviary. This is the most exciting thing ever. #wildoz #ausmammals

Did you know it’s an offence in Western Australia under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 to feed native fauna without a licence, it can attract fines up to $20,000

Instead:
🌱 put native plants in your garden
💧 leave out fresh water

Looking closely, it seems the echidna’s back legs are depicted the wrong way round, facing forwards rather then backwards 🤔

Koala scats (pooh) in our garden

Every time the weather turns bad these scats turn up under a big old pine tree. My theory is a Koala is using the pine as a shelter tree. We have seen her here a couple of times but she is very hard to find.

Happy to see at least one of the local wombats survived the flooding and is back home. #wildoz #ausmammals

FUZZBALL FRIDAY: today's creature feature is the Honey Possum (Tarsipes rostratus). Australia's own Winnie the Pooh, this pint-sized pollen-guzzler is the only species in its family, has fewer teeth than the average marsupial, and a brush-shaped tongue. What a delightful little weirdo! #ausmammals

Mummy & baby possum banging around on the loud metal fence: I’ve never seen a possum wag its tail like this before.
We have cohabitation between brushtail and ringtail possums here - not sure if it’s peaceful, but I saw a ringtail on the same fence only a few weeks ago.

Spectacled flying foxes (Pteropus conspicillatus) have distinctive straw-coloured fur around the eyes which gives them their name. The Baby Yoda-lookalikes have the smallest known distribution and population of the four Australian mainland Pteropus flying foxes. They play an important role in the rain forest as pollinators and seed dispersers.

An endangered Australian mammal, it's found in north-east Queensland and on the Torres Strait Islands, as well as in Papua New Guinea, parts of Indonesia and the Solomon Islands. Surveys have shown a dramatic decline of over 90% in the population of the Spectacled Flying-fox over in a 15-year period from 1985-2000, going from 820,000 to just 80,000 over this time. Until I saw this Bennetts Wallaby do this, I had no idea that macropods sometimes like to just sit on their tails and relax.

Night-vision (black and white) photo, taken from the side, of a sleek mammal on a fallen log in a forest.

Its head is down, sniffing the log. Its tail, which is as long as its body, is held out behind it with a bend 2/3 of the way down. The body, legs and tail are covered with white spots of various size.

I just checked the camera at the quoll spot we have a new young one. By comparing unique spot patterns I've identified at least 21 individual spotted-tailed quolls in the three years we've lived here.
