Been away from posting here for a while, trying to get through the winter. My spice bush is telling me spring is here, finally.

So far I’ve successfully released 12 #monarchs - I have 13 in chrysalis and 20ish smaller #caterpillars; 2 #spicebush #swallowtails and have 7 more in chrysalis; have 2 pupated #hummingbird moths, and dozens of #pipevine swallowtail cats. Plus #tiger swallowtail and #spottedadmiral visitors!
A time lapse of a #spicebush #swallowtail #caterpillar going through the process of turning into a pupae, where it will overwinter before undergoing #metamorphosis into a #butterfly and emerging in the Spring. You can clearly see the silk harness it looped around its upper body to hold it in place.
A timelapse of a #spicebush #swallowtail #caterpillar preparing for #metamorphosis by attaching itself to the surface with silk at the bottom, then creating a silk sling for its upper body to hang from. It gets into a set position at the end, where it stays for several hours before it pupates.

Tiny pale yellow butterfly egg on a squash leaf.
This is either an Eastern Black Swallowtail or Spicebush butterfly. Mostly black butterfly with white, orange, and blue markings on a parsley plant.
Eastern Black Swallowtail, or Spicebush Swallowtail? It laid eggs on my parsley, squash, and licorice plants. Going to have to wait to see what the caterpillars look like. 🐛

Lindera benzoin is starting to put on a show around Dundas. Replace a forsythia with a spicebush today. #ontarionativeplants #hamont #spicebush
Lindera benzoin ( #spicebush). A #shrub #native to eastern NA. Small yellow #flowers bloom early in spring followed by bright red fruits in summer. Leaves and stems have a spicy scent when crushed. Found in moist, rich woods. Host plant of spicebush #swallowtail #butterfly.

What’s in bloom today? The yellow blooms of Lindera benzoin (Spicebush). This is a native shrub/understory tree that flowers before it leafs out. This native plant is a larval host plant for Spicebush Swallowtail Butterflies. It produces berries in autumn that attracts birds and mammals.

#Maple leaves fallen with not a hint of gold or crimson. #Sourwood and #spicebush pick up the slack: the understory is ablaze in the dusk.
