I saw the Khionians get a few guys across the sector with a portal. Then why use starships and why didn't it solve the burn?

I know nothing about when they made it or if it has limitations, but my imagination is on a multi-year strike so I'll call it #BadWriting. #SpoonFeedMeLikeBaby
