🌍🌏 Great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) The Great spotted woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker with a mostly black and white plumage. Adult males and juveniles have a crimson patch on the nape, which is absent from the otherwise similar-looking adult female. They have a white upper belly, red lower-belly, black wings featuring white spots, and a black head with a white patch on each side. These woodpeckers have a strong, chisel-like beak that they use to excavate tree trunks in search of food. Great spotted woodpeckers are commonly found in woodland areas, parks, and gardens with mature trees. Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) Distribution: Widespread across Eurasia from Ireland to Japan, and in North Africa from Morocco to Tunisia.
