It has very visible stripes on both sides of the face and neck, which connect with the breast plumage. Being a likely mature specimen, only the nape is red, while the crown is black; and the breast is not entirely white, but a dirty, cream color. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻 (𝗘𝘀𝗽): Detalle muy cercano, a modo de retrato, de la cabeza de un pico picapinos macho, identificable gracias a la mancha roja de la nuca del ave. A male Great Spotted Woodpecker clinging to a metal peanut feeder, and showing part of his very long tongue. He's about the size of a Blackbird, and is mainly black and white. His back, wings, and tail are mainly black, but he has large white shoulder patches and white spots on his wings. His cap and moustache are black, and his cheeks and chin are white. He has a white breast and a red belly, and a bright red patch on the nape of his neck. Female Great Spotted Woodpeckers don't have this red neck patch.
