Image showing an index finger holding 5 fossilised Carboniferous crinoid columnals/ossicles. These are around 330 million years old from Fife, Scotland. The crinoids are disc shaped and have star shaped holes in the centre. These holes are the central canal - where the animals nervous system etc would have been housed. Crinoids are echinoderms, related to starfish and urchins etc and they have five point radial symmetry, hence the star shape in these fossils.
Here's some cute wee Cuddy's beads for #StCuthbertsDay! In medieval times, fossilised crinoids were collected from the shores of Lindisfarne and strung together to make necklaces and rosaries 🖤
