It makes borders visible, normalizes them, or scandalizes them. Based on controversies about the use of barbed wire in colonial contexts and in recent measures against migration, I argue in this article that the emotional impact of barbed wire is linked to the object’s close association with danger. The dangerous nature of barbed wire can trigger either fear of others or compassion for them, depending on how individuals position themselves. The affective reaction thus refers to social boundaries between social groups. Barbed wire fences around camps or at borders construct the people on the other side as potentially dangerous others and thus have an impact on societies. However, the bodily palpable raw violence of the metal spikes can also lead to feelings of human connection across the fence. The significance of this flexible technology for controlling bodies in space in the internalization of boundaries is explored based on historical controversies surrounding its emotional evaluation.
