Tanguay seems to have been a real character, by the way; I may have to do a separate post on her someday soon. Her singing voice apparently was fairly ordinary, but she put forth 100% effort in performance & was known (& loved) for outrageous, eccentric behavior. #edwardian #victorian #stagestar
Famous stage star of the 1900's, Eva Tanguay, sobriqueted the "I Don't Care Girl" after her most famous song (and played by Mitzi Gaynor in a 1950's film musical/biopic), in that day's version of a pin-up pose. She's wearing tall, knee-length, open-front boots with "French" heels over white tights, and dark shoulder-length gloves; her hair is down around her shoulders.
Actresses of the day had a lot of leeway to show off their legs on stage, providing said legs were properly hosed (usually in tights) and shod or booted. Here's "The I Don't Care Girl", Eva Tanguay, in what one might call the Edwardian version of a pin-up pose: #edwardian #stagestar #fashionhistory
