Day 30

I worked on my novel Mirror Siren for the #StartingOffWrite. My goal was to reach 25k words by the end of the month. I didn't quite make it, but got close. So I say that was good progress

Now on to editing book 2 of SoM called Secrets of Battle!

Dammit, i was typing way too locked-in and the time elapsed for the daily project target elapsed! I couldn't get a screenshot of how many words i typed today exactly! Dammit, now my wordcount for #StartingOffWrite is in question!!

At least 2100 for today, though.

The next building was a little bakery. It had an old, faded sign that looked like a pie. How could I have forgotten this? Momma always said no. The sign simply read “Jed's Est. 1856.” I closed my eyes, and the smells drifting out threatened to pull me inside.

Instead, I heard a sudden, high-pitched bark and a distressed squawk. Spinning around, I immediately had to jump out of the way. A speckled hen burst out from the open garden gate, and a scruffy pup was hot on its heels. Its ears flopped wildly with each stride. The hen took to the air to frantically land on top of a rain barrel. The pup was a tangled mess of spindly limbs and oversized paws as it tried to change direction in the mud. The dog’s legs caught up to its body just in time for it to crash into the side of the barrel. At this, the little hen calmly took a second leap and made her way to the roof. I laughed.

A young man suddenly whirled around the fence post with one hand gripping the top. The other clutched a broom as he skidded through the gate. Instant regret played out across his face as he saw me. Mud flew everywhere as he desperately tried to stop, and his face flushed as red as a beet.

My smile turned to a frown after realizing that, in all that commotion, this skirt was as speckled as the hen. Mud was everywhere. Someone would have taken care of that at home, but I hadn’t a clue what to do here. I bit my tongue to prevent a colorful phrase from escaping. I took a deep breath like momma used to tell me to do.

“The chicken is on the roof,” I said with the fakest of smiles.

Day 16:

I recently put down a slapstick, physical comedy style meet-cute involving a chicken, a puppy, and the prospective couple below in my #WIP. That was really fun. I liked writing that. I attached some screenshot below.

Day 15:

I'd like to shine a light on my particular corner of the world in a fun, whimsical, and--ultimately for me--grounding way. It's giving me a chance encounter to get to know roots even when my kin are long gone.

Also: my mom wanted me to be an engineer. 🙃

Forgot to update, wrote some word for the #StartingOffWrite challenge yesterday. Not the full day target because i was still recovering from my brain being stupid around Bluepit. Gotta admit, this particular chapter is giving a bit of trouble, just trying to push through it.

#StartingOffWrite is really giving my marathon writing abilities and energy reserves a run for their money!

Today is the first full day I lost out on making any word count contribution, because Act 3 needed more outling.

Hopefully the prior overachieving makes up for it, but I'm scarce on socials.

Syd the Slime is pretty neat. He keeps things pine fresh. He can be fairly alarming until you realize he's just trying to get rid of the messes, though.

As a dad to two wonderful young children as well as a middle school teacher, time and energy. It's not particularly close, either.

Sitting down and finding time to intentionally write is hard. I'm pretty wiped out after the kids' bedtime most days.

How's everyone's #startingoffwrite going? I got pulled into stuff plus health got in the way so I'm not where I hoped to be. That's okay though. Life happens. Its a new week.

Alllrighty then, back into the swing of it for #StartingOffWrite!
Made some decent progress today. Finished off a chapter, got a bit into the next, flowing towards the final big arc for Tides of Sourcery with I’m hoping everything fitting in nicely for what is a first draft!

Day 12:

I thought I would show off some neat Google Docs functionality. As a parent who often attempts to write with my phone, I need to be able to access my work anywhere.

So, I use a combination of Google Docs and Google Keep. Check out the screenshots below.

Day 10:

Writer's Block is hard.

I tend to take a break and read/watch a favorite show or book, take a closer look at the story structure, and try to figure out how they did it.

The trick for me is forcing myself to sit back down at the keyboard.

Day 9 of #startingOffWrite and i got a lot done. Two separate blocks of text added with another part copy-pasted in in-between those. Not counting the pasted in part tot he word count because i wrote that in December, and that would break the Jan challenge.

You have to actually do the thing to do the thing. There's no way around that. If you want to write it, you have to write it.

Yes, this is mostly for myself. 🥲
