Enslaved and free black workers dug deep into Bellows Island, hauling granite and laying bricks under scorching sun and bitter winds. They forged her pedestal block by block, while overseers pocketed the pe. From muddy trenches to towering stone, they raised her up there, sweat mixing with the dirt of a promise they couldn't claim some requirement. Others, brick layers all denied the liberty she'd symbolised. Their labor gave her a foundation, yet history locked their names away. This isn't just about a stash issue, it's slavery, irony, and the hands that built America. Imagine freedom without their toil. So why don't we know them ? Their stories buried.
