"We'll see, Leo," Clara whispered, feeling the familiar fear, but this time, it was mixed with a healthier dose of hope. "We'll see how you handle the long haul." Leo took the challenge seriously. "‘Long haul’ starts with clean-up," he announced, dragging himself away, with some effort, from the gravitational pull of Bartholomew's judgement. The repotting had left a fine, gritty residue of pumice and soil on the pristine white counter. Predominantly where Leo had worked. As Clara put the repotting things away and organised her plant cupboard, Leo helpfully remembered Clara's conditions; grabbed the roll of paper towels and the multi-surface cleaner from near the sink, his movements economical and practiced. He was, after all, a professional in managing immediate messes. In less than ten minutes, the kitchen island was spotless, the butcher paper neatly folded, and Peter, the newest addition, was placed carefully near a sunnier window whilst Clara thought about his permanent spot. "Ninety percent of the job," Leo said, tossing the last of the used paper towels lightly into the bin. "Tidying up after chaos, but admittedly; not usually my own.” She looked at the rabbit-eared cactus, then back at the man who had drawn whiskers on it. "Except this time, it was more… contained," Clara murmured.

Legorunbuddy and legorunkitten at a different spot in the park. Its meant to be a water feature but in 25 years of it being there I can count on one hand the amount of times it has ever been turned on. Its a shame because the kids love it when it is.

Clara meticulously laid out a large plastic tray, followed by a sheet of butcher paper, establishing an area for the upcoming mess. Leo, despite his claim of being "great with dirt," fumbled clumsily into the gloves. He watched, fascinated, as Clara picked up the chosen terracotta pot, checking the drainage hole was clear. "Why the gloves?" he asked, picking up a bag of gritty, mineral-heavy cactus mix. Clara looked at him "Really? Because, it's still a cactus?" Pulling on her own pair and carefully lifting Peter, she continued. "Those little fuzzy dots? Those are glochids. They might look soft, but they're tiny spines, with backwards facing barbs. They’ll irritate the skin for days.” She spoke from experience, remembering trying to open a prickly pear in her youth, and wondering why they were named such… only then realising with the painful velcro feeling of her palms when touching anything, afterwards. “It's a great example of attractive danger. It looks deceptively harmless, but if you ignore the rules, you pay for it later." She glanced pointedly at him. Leo chuckled, holding his hands up in mock surrender. "Point taken.”
