💭 Are you a planner or a doer?

@smsm1 But five kids and no car imply dense urban core... My #cycling centered lifestyle is actually a luxury. #streettalks
Sadly missed Christian Wolmar's #streettalks this month but this looks like a good'un next month too: movementforliveablelondon.com/2013/01/14/street-talks-...
Rare I accidentally put a reminder on a calendar entry. But apparently I did with tonight's #streettalks I can't actually go to #saltedwound
Am v reluctantly going to give #streettalks with @wolmarforlondon a miss tomorrow, between work & Scotland trip. Livetweet it like mad, all!
Natalie responds to safer cycling issue w/a textbook speech like we hear from so many speakers at #streettalks: rds not just for cars #fem11
Good discussion after #StreetTalks presentation and great to meet & chat to @RichardHebditch after that too. He too loves spider bus maps :)
Hebditch says outer London has huge potential for change - more so than inner; CfBT are lobbying Mayoral candidates accordingly #StreetTalks
Campaign for Better Transport wants to see outer London travel fund to address the issues. Key battleground in Mayoral election #StreetTalks
Hebditch returns to open up the discussion - how can we bring change about? "Travel behaviour can change and is changing." #StreetTalks
Bourne shows an example of "inappropriate" housing development - all winding cul-de-sacs. Looks a lot like our old 2004 estate! #StreetTalks
Lots of images that look like spiders' webs being shown. Big towns and smaller towns, all linked by transport routes #StreetTalks
Development densities need to be highest at transport hubs, where amenities are also (often/ideally) located. #StreetTalks
Likewise, new homes should be developed near local amenities, to reduce the need to travel elsewhere by car #StreetTalks
Fourth remedy: integration of transport and planning. Developments need to be on the public transport network, not road network #StreetTalks
Bourne talks of a "new life for main roads", by slowing traffic, widening pavements, removing guard-rails etc. #StreetTalks
Practical measures include a default 20mph limit, removal of one-way systems, and (perhaps controversially) shared space. #StreetTalks
3rd remedy: improve public realm. Includes prioritising pedestrians & cyclists in town centres - research says they spend more! #StreetTalks
Second remedy was Smarter Travel schemes, like a successful scheme in Sutton. #StreetTalks
Bus lanes also need improvement and longer hours. In privatised rail Bourne advocates better value Gross Cost contracts. #StreetTalks
Fares need reviewing - especially bus fares - "PAYG fares have risen by 55% under Boris" - and Z2-6 travelcard abolition. #StreetTalks
First remedy: improve public transport. Needs to be done at low cost atm, though. #StreetTalks
Having depressed everyone and reminded us why we moved to inner London, Bourne moves onto his four proposed remedies for outer. #StreetTalks
Bourne talks of people at TfL whose job it is "to apologise for the Mayor's 'smoothing traffic flow' agenda" :) #StreetTalks
There are at least as many congestion hotspots in outer London as in inner, demonstrates Bourne with a congestion map #StreetTalks
Bourne's showing same pages of Westfield Stratford City web site that I was despairing over recently: parking, parking, parking #StreetTalks
Outer London has a lot more developments with large catchment areas - everything from out-of-town shopping centres to hospitals #StreetTalks
"A lot of parts of outer London have very poor access to local amenities, which motivates people to get into cars" - Bourne. #StreetTalks
Outer London is home to two-thirds of Londoners, and also has more carbon emissions per head than inner London does. #StreetTalks
Bourne gives stats about differences between inner & outer London. All quite familiar to us who've moved from latter to former! #StreetTalks
