I know this is just a sketch, but I sketched it as a little bit of a thank you to @getvalentined.com who so kindly came to my rescue when I was struggling with my new art programme.

I know they enjoy this ship, so it felt right~ Thank you again, I appreciate you so much 💖

A screenshot from the ellipsus writing platform with a box pulled up from the bottom reading "Word Count," followed by "Words: 16637" and "Characters: 96374."

Slightly dimmed in the background is an excerpt of the story in progress, reading as follows:

Even reminding himself of that, however, Vincent couldn’t help but think about it for just a moment more, Cloud’s words as he made the suggestion ringing out in his memory as if they might mean something that they never possibly could.

'We’ll make a whole trip of it, you and me.'

He sat back down as Cloud had demanded, setting the calipers aside but slightly out of the way, behind the two coffee mugs still sitting on the table from just before they’d started work on the manor early this morning.

“You and me,” he murmured softly, looking at those two mugs side by side. A simple thing, like living together. There was no circumstance in which it could ever mean what Vincent wanted, but it did mean something.

“If we redid the greenhouse—”

“Still not enough,” Vincent interjected. “I’m referring to a difference measured in orders of magnitude, not a stone or two.”

Well, that eliminated that option. Cloud turned back to the stove, pulling the lid off the pot and giving the simmering broth within a stir. “Right.” He paused. “How much is a stone, again?”

“Fourteen pounds,” Vincent replied succinctly. “Unless you’re weighing meat, in which case it’s eight.”

The phrase ‘eight pounds of meat’ flashed through Cloud’s mind in tandem with the memory of why he was so determined to keep Vincent seated; he managed to hold back the groan of frustration at his own traitorous, idiotic train of thought, determined to keep himself under control.

This was stupid. He wasn’t some hormonal teenager who got hard at a breeze, and he’d literally shared a tent with Vincent in the field more times than he could count. Cloud had seen Vincent closer to nude more often than anyone still alive—well, except maybe for Veld, the old Turk now working with the WRO as a consultant on complex field assignments. Vincent had mentioned him by name in such a way as to confirm they’d been contemporaries within the department, and Yuffie had told a couple stories discussing the old man’s complaints about Vincent leaving to decommission the mansion that, if they were even close to the truth, indicated they’d once known each other fairly well. Not enough to be friends today, obviously, but the Turks cleaned up in the locker room at Shinra HQ the same as everyone else, so it was certainly possible that Veld had seen Vincent naked.

Cloud couldn’t imagine a Turk getting hot and bothered over a colleague being well-endowed, even so much as Vincent. If a Turk could keep his head on straight—almost forty years ago, back when every party drug on the planet was legal and people in power repeatedly made some of the worst decisions in history, two things that weren’t necessarily related, but certainly didn’t speak very highly toward the era’s sense of propriety—then so could Cloud.

“I see why we don’t measure in stones anymore,” he said.

A square image broken into nine separate segments, with the centermost section reading "20% off everything on INPRNT" above the URL inprnt.com/gallery/getvalentined.
The other eight blocks are illustrations.
Top left: Genesis Rhapsodos and Sephiroth in low light, Sephiroth injured with a gash across his head and Genesis cradling him close with his arms around his shoulders. Genesis is facing straight ahead, eyes glowing bright in the dark, an energetic aura rising up around him indicative of an active limit break.
Top middle: Cloud Strife and Sephiroth against a starry background, posed in the style of La Pieta, Cloud holding Sephiroth in his lap.
Top right: Vincent in his Galian Beast outfit from Ever Crisis, Cloud looking up at him with a deep blush on his face. Cloud is holding the leash which is attached to the leather strapping on the front of Vincent's coat.
Middle left: Sephiroth, unclothed, sprawled out unconscious on a vague, grassy green background, coils of lifestream wrapping around him. Genesis is kneeling over him, one hand combed into his hair to pull it back from his face, staring down in wonder.
Middle right: Vincent against a moonlit backdrop, gripping at the gleaming protomateria in his chest with his right hand, gauntleted left had raised up to partially cover his left eye, which is glowing yellow, red and black horns rising up from amidst his hair.
Lower left: Genesis and Sephiroth embracing one another, wings interlocked and brows pressed together, bodies almost flush against each other.
Lower middle: Vincent in a modified WRO uniform, looking pensively down at a cup of coffee while Genesis lounges against a table in the background.
Lower right: Vincent with his gun raised, muzzle flash bright in the foreground, lunging in front of a slightly dazzled-looking Cloud, protecting him from something just off-screen.

Vincent Valentine and Cloud Strife shown in profile. Cloud is dressed in his normal modified SOLDIER uniform, while Vincent is wearing the Galian Beast Mantle outfit from Ever Crisis. Vincent is much larger than shown in canon, closer to Galian Beast's height, leaned over with his arms behind his back to speak to Cloud, eyes half-lidded with a slightly sultry expression. Cloud is holding onto the leash at Vincent's collar with both hands as if pulling him down closer to Cloud's own level, looking up at Vincent with wide eyes, his face extremely flushed and entire body slightly sweaty while what appears to be steam rises from him in the background.

“The concept and method of introducing foreign material in utero to produce something greater than human came from my father, and the Jenova Project as we know it came from that concept,” Vincent continued, turning away again. “Lucrecia signed on to the project after my father’s death to continue some extension of his work—as his top research assistant, she knew the process better than anyone alive at the time. Gast chose to bring me into the mix in his memory, as a way of honoring a dear friend’s legacy in his own attempt at creating a god.”
A callused hand wrapped around Vincent arm from behind, gripping tight just above his elbow, and Vincent whipped around, startled by the sudden contact. He’d been so focused on making himself clear he’d missed the sound of movement, the low footfalls softened by the thick layer of dust coating the attic floor as Cloud approached without a word.
Cloud, his features no longer awash in that helpless uncertainty from Vincent’s last look back, spoke in a voice as firm as his grip. “Do you want to tell me about this?” He inclined his head slightly, although not enough to break eye contact. “Or d’you think you have to?”
Vincent hesitated, shaken by Cloud’s ability to categorize his actions so clearly, so simply. It was dangerous for anyone to know him so well, but moreso for someone who obviously cared about him, someone who worried about his wellbeing even with intimate knowledge of the nature of his existence. Cloud wasn’t always the most outspoken, but when it came to enabling Vincent in actions and experiences with which he would only grow increasingly incompatible, Cloud had always been the most determined.
“I…owe it to you,” Vincent said, “to explain this.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“I owe you everything!”

Fleetingly, Vincent wondered if Cloud’s mother had been taller than him, or if she’d employed the use of a stool to do…whatever it was Cloud was doing in there.

“Need some help?” He asked, coming alongside and leaning against the side of the vessel, looking down but unable to see past the wild flaxen spikes of Cloud’s hair to the interior of the pot.

The younger man straightened up enough to bring his head back up above the rim. “Boost me?” he requested. “It’s supposed t’be set down in the dirt a foot or so, like how we found it, so it’s kinda hard to get into. I don’t wanna lean on it too heavily and crack it.”

Vincent nodded, coming around the side of the pot and crouching down. He grabbed Cloud’s raised foot at the heel, guiding it down to rest on his leg instead of the ground. “Switch,” he directed, leading Cloud to settle his weight onto that foot rather than the one still on the dirt. As he did so, Vincent shifted his own weight slightly, bringing his knees up and perching on the balls of his feet to hold his legs as high as possible while still maintaining stability—which was a decent distance, given the length of his legs and the fact that he could shuck off the pull of gravity with a little focus.

“Perfect,” Cloud declared. “Just a minute.” He set his other foot onto Vincent’s other leg and leaned back over into the vessel to continue the heretofore mysterious task that sent him racing out here in the first place.

Holding the younger man’s ankles with either hand to keep him steady, Vincent turned to look to the side and survey the grounds instead. He couldn’t very well sit and stare at Cloud’s ass, even if their current positions made it easy to the point of unavoidable if he so much as glanced upward in the slightest, and regardless of the powerful temptation to do just that.

It was one thing to gaze from a distance, even only a meter or two, but being this close made the prospect seem as invasive as it was lecherous. Just as Vincent had done his best to push aside the feelings experienced when riding on Fenrir with Cloud the other day, pressed flush against his back in a way that would have been perfect for all kinds of impropriety, he did the same now.

It was more of a struggle than he wanted to admit, and Vincent wondered again why Hojo hadn’t castrated him one of the handful of times he removed the majority of Vincent’s other organs.

He wondered if his mother would have felt so light, if he’d been able to reach her the night Nibelheim burned. If he’d been able to pull her into his lap the way he now pulled the only thing she’d ever instructed him to keep once she was gone.

Then again, he wasn’t enhanced back then, so maybe she would have been heavy. He hoped so; thoughts of her safety weighed on him constantly after he left for Midgar, that weight should have been tangible. She deserved to be heavy.

Cloud swung the debris shield up from the lock and frowned. “Oh,” he murmured, voice thick. “The key…”

His mother had been so worried about losing access to the box, he’d thought the number of extra keys she’d gotten cut was excessive—it was a cruel irony that it hadn’t been enough. One fit into a little hollow carved between the baseboard and the drywall that had once separated this space, no doubt thrown away when Shinra put the house back together; one was taped inside their postbox at town hall, a common enough practice for folks in town, definitely removed after the fire; one hung on a chain around Cloud’s neck from the day he left to enlist, presumably thrown away along with his infantry uniform; the last stayed on his mother’s person, lost forever at the same moment as her.

“I’ll have to…bring it back to the mansion,” he said quietly, letting the shield go to hold it by the sides again as Vincent moved in closer in his peripheral vision. “There’s got to be some way to cut it open, right? Without…damaging anything inside?”

Vincent knelt down beside him to examine the lockbox more closely, and Cloud found his grip automatically tightening when the other man extended one hand toward it. He knew Vincent wouldn’t do anything to it, he trusted him with that, but—

But it was Cloud’s mother. Whatever she’d wanted to leave for him, any words or memories she’d thought to save, whatever she thought worth keeping, it was all in this box. Most of it had been kept in envelopes and pouches, sealed up so Cloud couldn’t see and didn’t have to think about a day when he was the last Strife left, but it was all that was left of her outside his own reflection.
This was Claudia Strife, physical and tangible and real, dead but still here. The closest thing to a body he would ever have.

Cloud couldn’t let go.
