🌍 South African ostrich (Struthio camelus australis) The South African ostrich, also known as the southern ostrich, black-necked ostrich or Cape ostrich is a subspecies of the common ostrich, the largest living bird. Males displaying striking black and white plumage while females are a duller brown. These flightless birds have long necks and powerful legs adapted for running at high speeds. They are native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Southern Africa, including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, favouring open savannas and grasslands. Common ostriches are social birds, typically found in small flocks but can gather in larger groups. They are omnivorous, feeding on plants, seeds, and insects. Breeding males establish territories and can mate with several females, who all lay their eggs in a communal nest.
