Two soft leather cereal bowls after trimming. The one on the left, upside down, shows the small hole I always try to put into the foot of pots that might end up in a dishwasher or on a drain board. These are exactly the same diameter and will be "clam-shelled" together, rim to rim, with five or so small balls of wadding spaced between, when they go into the wood kiln for firing. The rims will be slipped but not glazed, as otherwise these bowls would be inseparable--very bad pedestrian sculpture, of no use to anyone
Yes, that's a bandaid sticking out of the foot of a half-trimmed pot. Didn't know which bowl I lost it in, throwing a set of six. Obviously would have re-thrown this one at the time, had I known where it went. Hoped it might reappear in the ribbons of clay I was trimming off, but no such luck. Shit happens.
Currently turning a set of six, make it five, identical bowls
.
Found that wayward bandaid

A bottle, concave from base to shoulder, convex from shoulder to neck, concave from neck to a rather thick lip, atop a bat on a pottery wheel . Thrown from 5 lbs/2.25 kg of Standard 182, a white stoneware. I wet trimmed it to around 3 lbs/1.35 kg. I'll probably spray it with helmer slip before biscuiting, line it with a shino after
Yet another bottle destined for side-firing in the anagama chamber

Two parts of a three-part section pot made from Standard 182. Base section on the potter's wheel, second part on a bat in the potter's hand
Second section dropped onto the first, with a bubble level on top of the bat on which the second section was thrown
Second -section bat removed; beginning the join using a wet sponge
Third section/top, a little over a pound, thrown in place. Total clay thrown: approximately 15 lbs/7 kg. Current weight: approximately 12 lbs/5.4 kg. Height: 18 in./45 cm. I'll let it dry a bit, cut it off the bat and turn/trim it
Just another section pot

A thrown bottle attached to a bat on a potter's wheel, Standard 182 body . Started with 7 lbs/3 kg. After wet trimming, it's down a kilo or so. Ultimately, it'll be around 3 lbs/1.4 kg. Height's some 13 in/33 cm at this point, but will probably shrink downwards a couple inches when it's fired in my wood kiln . What do you call a bottle with a concave body, a convex shoulder, and a squat neck? No idea. Not a common bottle shape in glass, that's clear
A bottle, stretched upwards further than the last
.
That one had a more pleasing profile
.
I got a better lift this time, but squandered it by necking in with too much clay above
.
Had to cut the finish down

Half a dozen mugs drying on wareboards, obscured by each other for the most part, except for the one in the foreground. Dipped in a bucket of Matt Long's butter slip, some helmer sprayed at the foot, some brush strokes of iron, some finger swipes of Troy
Mugs got some slip and deco

Handle tunnel just because

Six straight-sided mugs, with handles just attached, sitting on ware boards. They'll dry upside down under drycleaning plastic, so they won't crack at the joins. Equalizing moisture between the dryer bodies and wetter handles means no cracks!

Six newly-thrown mug bodies, Standard 182. I ran a finger up and down the inside of the blanks while the wheel spun slowly, stretching the clay, and then went back over the outside of each with a wooden straightedge. That way, the vertical walls of these flat-bottomed mugs have a little play in them, mainly travelling inwards, which gives some visual interest to what would otherwise be a bore to see
More mug blanks

The only problem with making mugs: handles

Doing them right takes time

Curvy stoneware bottle off the wheel, before trimming. Weighs about 4¼ lbs/1.9 kg, height's about 11 in/28 cm. After trimming it should be about 3 lbs. Probably fire it on its side
Gotta bottle up n go

Two pots, about 6¼ and 6¾ inches high, sitting on ware boards. They were thrown with the same amount of clay, three pounds of Standard 182. The one on the left has been biscuited to cone 06 (1823°F/995°C), the one on the right is wet off the potter's wheel. They'll shrink even more in the final firing
Proof that clay shrinks a little, when it loses mechanical water

Photo of three inverted cylindrical mug bodies. The one in the foreground has had its foot turned, while the two in the background wait their turn. It's best to wait until they are just the right consistency; too wet and you can easily distort the pot, too dry and it just takes too long. Also, the tooling marks end up jagged and chatterly as opposed to sinuous and pleasing
One nice thing about a straight-walled cylinder
.
You don't have to spend more than a few moments turning the foot
.
On to pulling handles
.

Two leather-hard white stoneware pots, each about 14 in/35 cm in height, a little less in width, slipped with Troy porcelain (and helmer spray, on the right). Thrown in three sections each, with between 14 and 17 lbs. They are more like 10 and 12 lbs at the moment
Caught a candid moment between two fairly weighty pots, as is their conversation
.
Why is it that they look so much more themselves in the company of other pots
.
The weighty convo?
.
Firing regimes, of course

Two mugs drying on top of phone book paper on top of wooden ware boards on top of a heavy wire shelf in a pottery on the Maine coast on a late afternoon in May on a beautiful blue marble spinning around a G-type fireball . Body: Standard 182 . Slipped with helmer, some finger swipes of Troy porcelain, some brushed cobalt-free black mason stain . They're about a pound, ½ kg, thrown with maybe 25% more mass than that
