Book Suggestion: Handbook of African Medicinal Plants With over 50,000 distinct species in sub-Saharan Africa alone, the African continent is endowed with an enormous wealth of plant resources. While more than 25 percent of known species have been used for several centuries in traditional African medicine for the prevention and treatment of diseases, Africa remains a minor player in the global natural products market largely due to lack of practical information. This updated and expanded second edition of the Handbook of African Medicinal Plants provides a comprehensive review of more than 2,000 species of plants employed in indigenous African medicine, with full-color photographs and references from over 1,100 publications.

Harnessing artificial intelligence to mitigate CO2 emissions and optimize energy use in Sub-saharan africa: Implications for sustainable economic growth This research aims to investigate the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in addressing the energy consumption and CO2 emissions challenges faced by countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and their implications for economic growth. It employed a theoretical approach towards examining how AI mitigates CO2 emissions and optimizes energy use in SSA countries. It identified opportunities for AI integration to enhance energy efficiency, while reducing carbon footprints, and promoting sustainable economic development.

Experiences of Health Research Data Sharing Among Researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa: Cross-Sectional Study Background: Digital platforms play a vital role in improving the availability and access to health research outputs and enhancing the engagement of policymakers and practitioners in the research processes. Despite their potential, it needs to be explored how digital platforms are utilised to manage and share health research datasets and publications, and translate research findings among health networks or institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Objective: To assess the practices of health research data management, including sharing among researchers and their support staff within three large Research Networks for Health Innovations in SSA. Methods: A cross-sectional mixed methods survey was conducted across three research networks in SSA, showing experiences of sharing research data using digital platforms among researchers of three large research and innovation networks in SSA and affiliated institutions in the Global North. A structured questionnaire was developed collaboratively with network representatives and piloted for clarity and contextual relevance. The questionnaire included both closed- and open-ended questions covering digital data sharing practices, barriers, and platform usage. Participants were purposively recruited from affiliated institutions and projects based on their involvement in research data generation or management. Data were collected electronically using Google Forms. A total of 160 respondents completed a self-administered online questionnaire, and following data cleansing, the survey data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The analysis summarises the demographic characteristics of the respondents, as well as the stakeholders involved in accessing research datasets and the channels utilised for sharing research datasets and outputs. Concurrently, the inferential statistics illustrate the association between the independent variables and the availability of data sharing agreements, management practices, and the sharing of research datasets. Ultimately, it delineates the factors influencing the sharing of research datasets. Results: Most respondents (56.9%) used electronic data collection tools to collect research data. Almost half (49.4%) of the respondents have a digital research data management platform. More than half of the respondents shared their research datasets (63.8%), and 61.3% shared research findings with the research community through different channels, respectively. Furthermore, most respondents shared their research datasets and research outputs through institutional data repositories (26.1%), scientific conferences (76.9%), and journal articles (68.8%). The study identified parameters such as sex, professional category (health professional, ICT, and data managers), and the role (researcher or student) influencing health research data sharing within the community. According to Cramer’s V test, the results show that the roles of the individual have the strongest association with the sharing of research datasets, followed by years of experience in research, then sex, and profession. Additionally, the logistic regression shows that females were less likely to share their research datasets compared to males. Data managers and ICT exchanged datasets less frequently in the professional group, and the researcher’s role was statistically significant in sharing research datasets. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that most researchers share research datasets and outputs through various channels. It was further found that digital platforms were essential in managing and sharing research datasets and publications since more than half (53.0%) of the respondents have and use digital platforms. In addition, the study identified factors that influenced researchers' practices of sharing research datasets and publications. Furthermore, key gaps limit the sharing of these research datasets, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient African dataset sharing platforms, a lack of institutional policy, and limited skills to utilise available platforms. Clinical Trial: Not applicable

Typology and Ethical Considerations of Digital Health Promotion Tools for Youth in Sub-Saharan Africa: Review of Examples From Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa Background: Digital technologies for health promotion have proliferated over the past decade, with uptake increasing steadily among young people, including those in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Youth increasingly rely on digital tools for health information, and the early influence of this digital technology can have an impact throughout the lifespan. While there is a growing body of literature on the opportunities and challenges of digital health promotion (DHP) for young people, a gap remains in research that closely examines the characteristics of digital health strategies developed specifically for youth in LMICs. Objective: In the present paper we investigate and compare selected examples of DHP tools from three countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, namely Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. Our aim is to create a multidimensional descriptive typology of DHP tools developed specifically to promote the health of adolescents and young adults in these countries. Methods: To select the tools, we conducted systematic online searches using relevant keywords, incorporating the expertise of local professionals to ensure a thorough search. Included solutions originated from one of the three countries of focus, and could take any number of forms such as apps, websites, chatbots, or social media initiatives. We thereafter deductively created a typology describing selected features of each tool, including health area of focus, key stakeholders, type of service, and ethical values explicitly referenced within the tool. While such high-level features of interest were selected based on the existing literature in the field, the detailed descriptive categories were identified through an inductive analysis of the tools. Results: A total of 31 DHP tools were identified. Sexual and reproductive health was the most common health area of focus for DHP services, which were primarily funded and supported by local NGOs, foundations, and international organizations. The assessed tools were predominantly web and social media-based, with the overarching goal and core value of expanding health knowledge and offering access to health promotion services to young people. Conclusions: With sustained investment, DHP can improve the health of young people while relieving pressure on healthcare services. The areas of mental health, as well as substance use prevention and nutrition, stand out with clear potential for health gains through investment in DHP. Addressing ethical concerns such as privacy, transparency, equity, and inclusiveness is essential to the safety, usefulness, and fairness of DHP. To achieve the greatest benefit, local youth perspectives and priorities should be included in DHP development. Local initiatives have potential to be the most agile, flexible, and relevant for the target audience of young people, with the overall goal of early intervention and greater health quality throughout the lifespan, and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
