Last one: a kora player, who played for us in the bar at one of the overnight stops on our trip up-river in Gambia. The kora is a cross between a lute and a harp, and the main body is made from a calabash gourd covered with cowhide.

From my own (modest) collection of modern studio pottery, a raku-fired vase made by South African ceramicist Christine Gittins (now based in South Wales). About 10 inches tall, it’s incredibly tactile to hold and stroke, and each side gives a different view.

The late great Barney was a terrible liar 😃
A Speckled Wood butterfly rests on a piece of concrete wall. Its wings are slightly open, revealing white speckles and various shades of brown. Part of its body, just behind its head, is green which fades to brown.
A Riband Wave moth rests on a white wall. Its wings are wide open, and reveal concentric, semi-circular markings that stretch from one side to the other. In between are bands of lighter brown, and all the wings are covered in tiny dark brown speckles.
A Gatekeeper butterfly rests on a nettle leaf, basking in the sun. It has thick brown markings around the edge of its wings. There's a dark dot on each wing (each with a smaller white dot in the middle). The centre of its wings are orange, but blend into brown markings close to its body.

This one definitely had ambitions to become a supermodel! It's gorgeous, with a moist brown nose surrounded by pink flesh. It has huge, dark eyes that are full of curiosity, and is covered in soft, white-beige hair/fur (actually, what is cow hair called?!).
Thank you! It was such a sweetie, and very, very curious about me. But not as curious as this one which tried squeezing its head through the gate to get close to me 🤣
