Wainwright Walks: Coast to Coast
Ep 4 of 6, Swaledale Uncovered
Julia Bradbury traverses #Swaledale in Yorkshire. Wainwright studied this 22-mile section in detail, presenting a route of valley bottom and windswept moor top.
Ivelet Bridge is a 16th‑century packhorse bridge crossing the River Swale near the hamlet of Ivelet, between Muker and Gunnerside in Swaledale. It is one of the most charming small bridges in the Dales.

Today seems like the perfect moment to ask: what’s your favourite place in the Dales? Lots of people love this classic view down Swaledale… but where captures your heart? 💚

A Yorkshire Dales landscape that features the stone-built dwelling of the hamlet of Thwaite alongside Thwaite Beck in beautiful Swaledale.
Situated near Muker in Swaledale, the picturesque hamlet of Thwaite, alongside its often fast flowing beck.
Popular with walkers, two long-distant paths run through it, the Pennine Way and Wainwright's Coast to Coast.

Dating from the late 16th century, Ivelet Bridge features a coffin stone on the north side of the bridge which was used by pall bearers to rest coffins en route from Muker to Grinton.

Today’s #snow reminded me of this #linocut print, Winter #Keld. It’s inspired by a photo I took in #Swaledale. My first intention was to evoke a summer's day, but whilst printing it, I loved it without the green block, and hence this snowy version.

Hand-printing takes time. Each colour layer in each print is #handprinted individually, with 3 days or more drying time between each colour. Here I’m printing the 5th colour layer for #Swaledale II.

A charming stone building covered in bright red ivy houses the “Kearton Tearooms” on a quiet village street. The autumn sunlight highlights the warm tones of the ivy and stone walls, with a few potted plants outside and a clear blue-grey sky above.
We love the striking colour of the foliage draped down the walls of the Kearton Tea Rooms in Thwaite. Give it a visit if you're ever in the area.

Located near Keld, Wainwath Falls is a wide, scenic waterfall on the River Swale. Though modest in height (just 1.5–3 metres), its charm lies in its tranquil setting beneath the limestone cliffs of Cotterby Scar.

#Swaledale #Yorkshire Enjoyed a lovely dogwalk in Swaledale yesterday, from Reeth to Grinton. Paused for cake and coffee at #TheDalesBikeCentre cafe and cakery, delicious! Lots of wild fruits and joyous reds and yellows of autumn leaves. Snapped this photo of #Spindle flowers & fruits too.
A great opportunity for #farmers & #landowners in #Swaledale to learn from experts about #soil fertility, how to interpret soil reports & take advantage of free soil testing for farmers in the Arkle, Widdale, or Gayle Beck catchments.

A fierce waterfall with water stained yellow from the peat taken with a slow shutter speed that also shows the tree in the foreground shaken by the wild wind.
It’s more of an abstract mood and in keeping with today’s wild weather with this from Wain Wath in similar conditions for today’s #WaterfallWednesday

"The image shows a sweeping view of a rural valley in the English countryside. Rolling green hills rise on either side, their slopes dotted with clusters of dark green trees and divided into irregular fields by old stone walls. In the lower valley, sunlight breaks through the clouds, casting a golden glow across the patchwork fields and illuminating a winding river that glitters as it flows through the scene. Scattered across the valley are small farmhouses, barns, and cottages, blending naturally into the landscape. The background reveals layers of hills fading into the distance, creating a sense of depth and tranquility. The overall impression is one of peacefulness and timeless rural beauty
Every morning we open a window to the #YorkshireDales and share some of our favourite views, like this one looking down into #Swaledale 💚 #MondayMotivation 💛
