When a classic German thrash metal band like Kreator takes the stage at Sweden Rock Festival for the 4th time in their career, it is with a solid and somewhat expected performance. High crowd contact factor and good response, but also a bit too much as expected. With a stage flanked by horned demon heads, bodies hanging in nooses from the ceiling and a backdrop of the latest full-length album Hate Über Alles, Kreator with Mille Petrozza in the lead stood when the stage curtain adorned with the band's logo fell and started the concert with Violent Revolution. Kreator is wonderful German old school thrash that has become more heavy metal over the years, but the older stuff works like a vintage wine that has only gotten better over the years. Sure, the newer albums work too, but it's when the older tracks are aired that my thrash heart is extra excited and the headbanging muscle once again gets extra training. The performance is lined with a lot of fire, smoke and confetti with a band that delivers at their best mood where the audience is willingly incited to several wall of death and mosh pits. Really good audience response I must say. However, it feels like everything is taken to another level when their best song of recent years Hail to the Hordes is torn off and followed by the classic Betrayer. After that, it's a nice moment where they rip off track after track that is good metal, but doesn't quite reach the level they can perform at.

However, the wonderful audience contact means that the atmosphere is enormously good all the way to the final encore. Mille mentioned that this was the band's fourth time at SRF and that without “kissing our asses” this time was the absolute best. However, I think when they played later in the evening on the Rock stage last time they were here in 2018, it was much better. Maybe they couldn't see the audience in the dark as well then and were freezing or experienced something else that disturbed, who knows? The set ended with the band's biggest classics from the first and second album - Flag of Hate and Pleasure to Kill respectively. They have a pretty good spread of songs in the setlist as they basically play a song from the albums they play songs from, but there are far too many songs missing from the first 4 albums. Could we hear a little more from the classic album Pleasure to Kill maybe? I mean, it contains a lot of top songs that just can't wait to be pushed out in the big festival speakers. In addition, the same setlist as last time in Sweden (Gävle Metal 2023) was played except for one song and all songs except 2 were last played at SRF 2018! In itself, this is a festival setlist but a little reshuffle so we got something more new would have been desirable. Despite the complaints about the song choices, it was still a really enjoyable event with a gig that contained everything you could ask for!
