Album Review: Carol Maia & Jeremy Gustin – ‘it’s nice to see a lake in your eyes’: an mpb moment to treasure from the Rio/Brooklyn partnership. Shaped by online exchanges between Rio and Brooklyn, ‘it’s nice to see a lake in your eyes’ by Carol Maia and Jeremy Gustin leaves no doubt about their shared sense of adventure. Brazilian singer-songwriter Maia and avant drummer Gustin swapped files, felt the jeopardy and revelled in the surprises of their long distance collab to arrive here, a recording of thrilling new pop awareness. Somewhere between tuned in NY art rock and the nu-tropicalia‘it’s nice to see a lake in your eyes’ has a freshness that keeps you on your toes…

Album Review: Truly great – The Great Emu War Casualties unveil their soaring debut album ‘Public Sweetheart No. 1’ The brilliantly, if rather enigmatically, named band The Great Emu War Casualties have just released their debut entitled ‘Public Sweetheart No. 1’ after a series of EPs and singles released since the early 2020s, and it's well worth the wait. It's a sparkling collection of jewels that combine humour, raw expression and anthemic choruses with delicate instrumentation and angelic harmonies. Joe Jackson says of the album, with his trademark self-deprecatory humour: ‘Public Sweetheart No.1’ is a blunt, honest self-assessment of my own behaviour over an extended period of time and the various ways in which I have affected the people closest to me, so I’ve at least tried to make it catchy in order to better live with myself.

Album Review : Benjamin Herman – ‘The Tokyo Sessions’ : A high energy trip to Japan with the Dutch jazz legend and his dynamic band. Much celebrated Dutch alto-saxophonist, Benjamin Herman, sounds like the right kind of music obsessive. Not the drill-down, detail driven, relentless refiner of his craft but a musician who restlessly seeks out new perspectives and inspirations. Over forty years on since he first started playing jazz sax and fifty plus albums down the line, now with his new set ‘The Tokyo Sessions’ he shows that he can more than keep up the creative flow. It’s a collection which reflects Herman’s long-standing connection with Japanese muso-culture. He recalls his first visit was in 1989, in a hastily put together band to fill in for some dates when the Glen Miller Revival Orchestra pulled out.

'The result fizzes with the dynamism and collective enthusiasm generated by Herman and this hyper-inventive crew'
